Intro to Arduino and Electronics Class

This is a 4-hour hands-on introduction to the Arduino micro-controller and beginning electronics and electronic components. This is an expanded version of our original Intro to Arduino class but with a more streamlined approach (we've done this class for over 175 people now!) and a deeper focus on electronics as well as Arduino.

You will learn:

Arduino Microcontroller basics
The waterfall model of electricity
Units of electrical measurement and Ohms Law
Interfacing digital inputs and output
Interfacing analog inputs
Writing clear and concise C code
Creating custom functions for more powerful code
Working with electronic components such as resistors, LEDs, potentiometers, light dependent resistors, and more.

You will need:

A Windows, Mac, or Linux Laptop
The free Arduino software (see below)
An Arduino starter kit (see link below to for kit links)

A Class fee of $40 is due at the time you RSVP and helps support the L.A. Robotics Club. The class fee does NOT include an Arduino starter kit (see below.) If you've taken one of our Arduino classes before this one is new and improved and you will learn new useful skills. If you're a complete beginner this class is still appropriate as no previous experience is necessary.

Come support the L.A. Robotics Club and Learn Arduino & Electronics!

I also would like to attend the beginner and intermediate class, The last class I attended was very informative, and Michael is great instructor,

I wish I had joined earlier. Will you be hosting another class like this?

Ok so my slightly revised plan for this morning is to grab a to-go order from Dinos Burgers and open the classroom at 11am while I eat lunch. If anyone would like to arrive early feel free to bring your food and eat from 11 till 12.

During that time we can also work on any Laptops that aren't uploading correctly to Aruduino boards, etc.

    See you soon!

    Hi Michael,

My son has a friend who would like to join us. I ordered another kit for him from Tim. Could you please increase our RSVP from 2 to 3, and we will plan to pay for two additional people at the door? Thank you,

    Dina

I am planning attending with my 13 year old son. I would like to sign us both up, how can I do that? We are coming from a soccer game that starts at 10:30 in Redondo Beach, but I'll have my assistant coach finish the game.

Just sign yourself up and you can pay for your son tomorrow at class. Check the link above for info on Arduino Starter Kits, software, etc.

Looking forward to it! I ordered my starter kit so I assume Tim will bring it to class tmrw?

He will. Make sure to check the link in the class description above and follow the instructions to at least install the free Arduino software. You won't be able to test but we'll do that first thing tomorrow.

If you're coming to Saturday's Arduino class and you haven't picked up an Arduino Starter Kit yet make sure to order one from Club Member Tim Laren:

    http://hacker.instanet.net/Store/starter-kit-breadboard-p-63.html

    or

    http://hacker.instanet.net/Store/starter-kit-robot-p-65.html

Tim will deliver your kit to class on Saturday and help us get everyone's laptops up and running as well.

Plus Tim gives 5% of sales back to the L.A. Robotics Club!

I won't be in attendance this time around but Raytheon is having an Innovation Challenge right now involving novel uses for Arduino and Raspberry Pi boards so I mentioned this class at an event today and posted a link to here on our internal community page. Hopefully that'll crank up attendance and get some cool projects featured at the Challenge.

Awesome! Thanks so much James for helping get the word out.

Hello Michael, We won't be able to attend, is there any chance that it will be recorded and posted somewhere? I know that idea has been discussed before. I would be glad to buy a copy of the training, Philip

I'm slowly working on a set of video lectures but we'll do more intro classes in-person as well. Keep watching the meetup schedule for more info.

Thanks Michael, I really enjoyed the classes we have taken from you before, and would suggest it for anyone who haven't taken them, It would be helpful to be able to access the class info anytime, after they are posted

Hi, I would like to RSVP for two people, so I could take the class with my son, but the RSVP is only allowing me to sign up for one. How can I sign up an additional person? thanks!

    September 23, 2013

    • Michael B.

Hi Diana, I'll check with Annika and see what options we have on the second person and how to do the payment. I'll send you an email later today. You should do two kits if you want to bring two laptops and have both of you work independently, otherwise one kit and one laptop would be fine.

      September 23, 2013

    • Dina

thank you for your quick response, Michael! I will order two kits from Tim Laren today.

(Note: as the class starts at noon you may want to drop by Dino's Burgers around the corner from the South Bay Entrepreneurial Center to grab a bite to eat around 11am. Hope to see you there!)
