Open Lab + Quadcopters

We are really excited about the explosive growth of our club recently! Due to the overwhelming popularity and limited space, we are now limiting RSVPs to 60 until further notice. Please consider this when you RSVP, and make sure you add the number of guests in your party. In addition, if your plans change, please update your RSVP here on Meetup to allow others to take your space.

OPEN LAB (ground floor) is ALL Projects of any scale. We will break into small groups and anyone interested in doing their own thing or would like to create their own conversation group, feel free to do so. We will have space for the NAO developers and the Quadrotor builders, as well as access to soldering irons, tools, drill press, rapid prototyping machines, etc. Bring your laptop; there's Wi-Fi!

QUADCOPTER (3rd Floor) will be a continuation of Quadcopter planning and building that will be led by Reiner Von Weber, Douglas Kuhn and John.

Have a quadcopter?

Bring it!

Thinking of building a quadcopter and don't know where to start?

Come and learn from those who've already done it!

Just curious about what a quadcopter is and want to take cool pictures to impress your friends?

All are welcome!

We will be answering all sorts of questions and sharing advice on how to build and the best resources to get parts from all over the web and in stores locally. We will have a small group meeting at least once or twice a month dedicated to building nearly all small aircraft, including blimps and jets!

NO EXPERIENCE NECESSARY!

Join or login to comment.

I am sure we will make a more official announcement, when the site is more polished, but you can now order Quadcoperts from shop.blackda.com and LA Robotics Club members receive a 20% discount with this coupon "LAROBOTICS". It would be great if we can get some orders in over the weekend so I can order the parts for next Sunday! (We are only doing in store pick-up at this moment.) Let me know if you run into any issues.

Hi all here is an interesting $15 FPV setup option to hook-up your iPhone and computer to do FPV quad flying! And also the review says the built in features of Reflection allow you to record the footage as it streams from the iPhone, so you don't have to worry about using up memory on your iPhone. http://www.rctutor.org/iphone-fpv.html

Great to see everyone again and since it's decided to go with DJI system this is what I found on eBay from this Maryland dealer that I had bought RC stuff before for $190. This is the very basic that only includes the base plates, frames, motors, ESCs and Props.

Simon perhaps you can use this as a good pricing point and give me what's your dealer's price so I can negotiate with this dealer to beat and/or throw in some freebies?

Still needed to complete the assembly are Naza Flight Control, battery, balancer charger, receivers, and transmitter.

Understood. And no I had not mentioned the club's name during the inquiry. Standing by on your price list.

Great to see everyone there. Now we just need to cut a hole in the fence so we can get some popcorn.

I am currently looking into getting a deal for the robot club on quad frames and arduino based controllers (main parts for uav/quad copters). Please let me know at the meeting if you are interested or shoot me a message.

The event is inside and outside! We will be flying some quads at a nearby field. Feel free to film it if you would like.

My apologies if frowned upon.. With that.

I have a bunch of UAV/Quad copter components that I need to get rid of.

Motors, ECM's, DIY Drone UAV Kit, A couple BOB boards for Multi Wii and corresponding pro mini board.. Even cable/battery connectors.

Please contact me if your in need of anything.
Would a "Discussion" more suited for this?

    Thanks

I was planning on doing a short, 30 minute or so, lesson on driving FETs and relays from arduino. For those who have done our beginning arduino class, this would be a good continuation to learn how to control something bigger and more useful than an LED. If anyone is interested, please comment below.

Yes we'd be interested; would it be similar to how you'd drive them from a Raspberry Pi? Thanks

The material I'm planning to present will be applicable to any controller

BTW in the previous meeting someone asked about what is FAA's stance on UAVs and this is what I found so far...

    http://www.faa.gov/documentLibrary/media/Notice/N7210.766.pdf

We got any attorneys here or connections to one to interpret all these legalise??

Bob perhaps you are right that the previous link was more focused on bigger UAVs. Here is an another link about LAPD's communication with to the California Association of Realtors. It has more to do with commercial use and how your neighbors perceiving you spying on them.

Andy - Thanks for posting this 2nd link which details the flying of personal UAs in L.A. County. I did not know about the 400' AGL ceiling, VFR or non-commerical use. For experimenting, those things won't effect flying too much.

Gene, It depends on if you want to learn to fly quadcopters or build them. MQX is a great place to start if you want to learn to fly them, but I can give other recommendations at the next meeting.

@Simon, I want to learn to build one, then fly it. :)

Keith, that sounds like a great idea!
Can anyone recommend starter quadcopter kits? I have no experience with them so something relatively easy would probably be appropriate. Or is it better to roller-you-own?
