Real-time dashboards with Node and R

Paper beats rock, scissors beat paper. In data science, the game could be called "model-data-realtime", with data substituting paper, models taking the place of rock, and real-time decisions being made by scissors. In this talk, I'll provide a brief overview of how fast modeling and big data can be used in practice, e.g., to detect sentiment changes on Twitter, or to monitor large-scale web operations. Using simple examples, I'll show how to build real-time data dashboards using Node, Google Chart Tools, and R.

Bio:

Dirk Neumann is a data scientist and founder of social supercomputing startup Opani ( http://opani.com ). He received a PhD in Computation and Neural Systems from the California Institute of Technology and has master degrees in computer science and psychology. In his previous life as a scientist, he studied computations in brain networks and soccer robots. Dirk has co-organized meetups for Bayesian modeling, R, and life science data analysis.

Peter will demonstrate how to start and work with a doRedis-based cluster on Amazon EC2. doRedis is a backend for the foreach package that creates flexible and fault-tolerant processing clusters that are a great fit for EC2 spot instances.

Bio:

Peter Foley is a cofounder and the technical chief of Pivotal Targeting, LLC, a political microtargeting and analytical consulting firm. He is a Ph.D. candidate on sabbatical from Caltech. Peter uses R as the core of Pivotal's production modeling and for exploratory analysis, visualization, and reporting.
