Radio Reception from Spark to 16-QAM

Details

We take radio communications for granted these days, but it has a long history of evolution. Edward Gellender, resident expert on such matters, gives us the low down on radio communications from the beginning to the modern era. He'll touch upon such topics as Continuous Wave, AM/FM, broadcasting, Shortwave, VHF, UHF and Data Communications including Phase Shift Keying (PSK), Quadature Amplitute Modulation (QAM), and Spread Spectrum.

Ed's lectures have been known to draw standing room only crowds so please RSVP via meetup.com if you can so we can get an accurate count of attendees.

About our Speaker:

Ed Gellender has worked on a wide variety of radio-related programs including Radios, Radars, aircraft carrier landing systems, automatic train controls and even weather balloons. Recently, Ed was the cognizant engineer for the APX-122 IFF interrogator on the Navy’s new E-2D radar plane, notably flight testing anti-fratricide combat ID (“Mode 5”).

While Ed has spent most of his lengthy career designing electronic gear, he has also worked with the New York City power company, Con Edison, on their high power distribution networks, including replacement of a substation powering a major bridge. (ISIS-era security keeps things vague.)

Ed has already delivered two presentations at LICN based on his IFF and power distribution work, and has found it fulfilling enough to try a third time with radio reception.

Career Summary: “Being an engineer has let me play with the most fun toys ever”

Attention Professional Engineers: An application for .2 CEU credits has been applied for and approval is pending. There will be no charge for these credits.

6:30 PM: Network with others over delicious food and soft drinks. We will be having deli heroes: American and Italian plus coleslaw, macaroni and potato salads. So, bring your appetite.

7:00 PM: Introductions, LICN announcements and presentation

Between our normal non-Meetup crowd and those on this Meetup list, we expect to have a good 40 or so people attending, so bring your business cards to share when networking.

More info about the LICN can be found at www.licn.org. Read our blog at licn.typepad.com.
