I am a newcomer to VV and have recently been backtesting strategies. After quite a bit of trial and even more error,
I had decided to be aggressive and try to apply a short strategy. As it turned out, I could not borrow most of the stocks
that my strategy provided since my broker(s) did not have them in inventory. My strategy employs a parameter of
using 300k as a minimum volume, so it really wasn't a matter of using low volume companies. As I use some of the
biggest brokers around, I decided to call VV tech support and inquire about my dilemma.
While they were quite helpful, their solution left me wondering if anyone in our group might have a better solution or
could advise based upon their experiences. The VV tech confirmed that he had the same
experience as I did, and suggested
that instead of trying to short individual issues I should either use Contra ETF's or use put option strategies. While I have
experience with options, options involve a whole other realm of considerations (especially time factors), which only confuse
the simplified streamlined strategy system that I was going to VV for in the first place.
It was a bit of a letdown to have spent dozens of hours looking for a decent short strategy to only have hit this roadblock.
I am curious if others in this group have any suggestions regarding how to short individual stocks.
