What is Land Ops?
Land Ops is all about adventure and exploration using off road capable vehicles to carry us into the deep unknown. Very few people venture this far into the wild and for good reasons.
As if the deep inland journey was not enough we also conduct navigation and radio communication exercises that elevate your experience to that of an expedition team with tactical mission objectives. You are NOT required to have radios to experience Land Ops, but at least a GPS device for geocaching.
Land Ops satisfies the person who seeks to embark on a journey into the unknown with a sense of purpose and accomplishment.
What we do is both fun and challenging. We're not just sight seers, we're operators, drivers, navigators, geocachers and radio communicators, survivalist and search and rescue. We use technology to create a unique game-play that is really not found in any off road clubs or adventure groups.
We attract off road explorers, campers, ham radio enthusiast, fire fighters, military men and women, geocachers and survivalist. We are known as Land Ops and we welcome you to our challenge.
Night Ops
One of the most unique operations you will ever experience in our group is a Night Op or Extreme Night Op. These are explorations and tactical exercises conducted with the added challenge of darkness. This is not as easy as it might sound. These ops are just plain spooky. Members have been known to return to base camp after a few short miles due to the level of sensory deprivation introduced by the dark of night. Navigating unknown terrain at night, far away from civilization is like driving on the dark side of the moon. However, night ops are well planned and conducted with capable teams and an over-watch element.
Teamwork is a crucial for successful night operations. Simulated search and rescue, satellite debris recovery, radio relay projects, and geotactical ops are just a few night time exercises you might expect on any given Land Ops trip. For many members night ops are the most exciting. The confusion factor and chaos introduced by the aspect of night must be overcome in order for the operational objectives to be met. Since night ops are extremely dangerous from a standpoint of "getting lost" they are always conducted with multiple teams working together. You will not soon forget a Land Ops night operation.
Daytime Ops
For daylight operations you can expect several of the following exercises to be conducted; Capture the flag (competitive), Progressive geocaching and puzzle solving, geotactical relay (teamwork), buried treasure hunt with real prizes inside the treasure chest, geocaching, exploring and various other navigation and communication games.
Mind Set
Each participant is encouraged to bring a good attitude and expect to be challenged at some point. Our missions which are planned for fun. In other words, they are not so difficult that you have to be a scientist to complete them, however they can easily become extremely challenging due to the environment and unexpected adversity. You should come expecting to have fun, but if you are not prepared for challenges you might get easily frustrated. Getting stuck in the sand, a windy day that tries to uproot your tent and/or a cold night can test your mental strength to keep it together. Come for fun and expecting a challenge!
Teamwork
Although some of the exercises are competitive the main theme of the Land Ops adventure trips is "Teamwork". Experienced members and new members team up to accomplish mission objectives that involve
Equipment
The minimum requirement is a reliable vehicle for offroad use and a gps device for finding waypoints and geocaches. Radios are not required, but helpful. Members who are not radio operators are encouraged to pick up a few FRS radios (not CBs) so that you may communicate with other members vehicle to vehicle. Ham radio operators you should have a field day. We use 2 meter, 440, repeaters, and APRS (automatic position reporting systems) and anything else you might want to show and tell.
Membership
Membership and trips are free. Currently; Land Ops does not charge any fees. However, none of us really has any money (we're not rich), we're all working folks....so....your donations are encouraged. Buying our videos and participating in raffles really helps off set the costs. Help where you can! We encourage trip donations. Donations are not required to attend and we won't look at you funny if you don't donate, but we consider a $35 donation per vehicle to be a nice gesture for the off road trips. We've been given more and it helps. Donations go towards trip organizing, setup and prizes.
