I have been scribbling down a tale of an Apocalypse/Alien Invasion of sorts. It's in the genre of Speculative Fiction. Themes toyed with are religion, strength of faith and the typical father/adopted-daughter-bio-engineered-god relationship; also, there is a bit of Build It And They Come thrown in but on a much grander scale . When finished it will run around 10 thousand words.
Speculative Fiction or SF or Sci Fi in the tradition of Harlen Ellison, Ray Bradury (R.I.P.) Robert Silverberg, Richard Matheson and the nearly forgotten John Varley. This is a short list of a long list of my influences with Varley and Papa Hemingway sharing my writer's throne.
I am Joseph Asaro. By my 5th birthday cake, my world view had been so perverted, my favorite movie was Romero's Night of the Living Dead. From there, my brain-box crated around a new nugget of wisdom: meat munching Zombies like to trick-or-treat.
Drake has a clear mission: to "give back" to us would-be writers. He more than accomplishes this with these writing classes (well, I felt this was the case with the two I attended) with exuberance, and a sincere humility and guidance not often associated with a published author but with the humility and guidance one expects from a trusted friend. If you want to become a professional writer, of any genre, then Drake is your man.
