Why do you want to learn Chinese?

I am interested in the Asian culture. A mixture of Chinese, Japanese, Taiwanese. I am also kinda at a loss when it comes to the different Asian cultures & languages. I met this Taiwanese girl when I was in Vancouver, Canada & she knew Taiwanese, I believe two types of Chinese & I think another language. I went to this birthday party one time when I was up there & it was a Chinese birthday party. I had no idea what anyone was saying, but it was very interesting experience. I know living in Texas we promote being bilingual as speaking English/Spanish. But there is also a very large Asian community in the area too. it would be nice to learn a different language & be able to communicate or understand what someone is saying when it is an Asian function. And may be one day, i have the opportunity to go to China & walk the Great Wall, visit the Forbidden City and/ or meet some new people who speak the language and share an interest in the Asian culture.

Have you ever learn Chinese before?

I got a CD from my brother for Christmas one year. I tried that for a little while & it's difficult to learn when it's just you. Then I know there are different types of Chinese too. I do remember one thing from that CD, one of the numbers is the same word used for beer. ???

What is the best Chinese related memories you ever had? (movies, foods, etc.)

My husband & I combined Chinese & Japanese cultures together for a wedding. We wore Chinese attire & got married in The Japanese Gardens in Houston. We also go to the Dragon Boat races in Houston at least once a year. They have the downtown races the first Saturday in May & then the Dragon Boat Regatta that ends the season every year in October. Also was able to see The Forbidden Gardens before it got shut down to see the minature replica of the Chinese Forbidden City & learn about the culture of their architecture, weaponry, foods, government, customs, etc. Then we also did the Forbidden City thing at the Natural Museum of Science a year or two ago. Just really interested in the culture, traditions, etc.

Introduction

Hi, my name is Leslie & I would be interested in learning Chinese as a new language. Would like the opportunity to practice with others. I've studied Spanish in school a long time ago. Can read & understand some of it but really can't speak it at all
