Why on earth would you schedule this on the same night as DCRUG and prevent people interested in Ruby from attending another event for Ruby? You should reschedule your event.

Evan, that effort has obviously not worked. Why not figure out a solution that works to get both meetups in the same place on the same night in the same place so people can go? There is a huge potential upside for everyone - if you have experienced people around for the event then you can have mentoring and peer discussions that obviously cant' happen if things are forked. Ultimately, the DC developer community is a herd of cats so it is hard to get people to do anything together sometimes but there are just so many reasons to keep things in one place.

I just want to add one comment to Christopher about this... NoVARUG is in Reston. I'm an occasional drop in for NoVARUG as well as DC. That is usually because of who the speaker is, etc. Most of us don't want to have to fight traffic at the end of the business day or take the afternoon off just to go to a meetup in order to avoid traffic. I think there is a great case for forking efforts in cases like that. I had an office in College Park for four years while I was in Baltimore so my wife could get her grad degree. I came really close to organizing something there (maybe a CPRUG) because it was challenging to get to BMore on Rails right after work or to DCRUG and then have to drive all the way back.

Unfortunate that this is on against the DC Ruby Users Group. If you guys haven't attended DCRUG (or Arlington Ruby) before, you may want to consider it in the future!

I started the group because there wasn't any other type of group like this. I've met some great folks in the group who have become close friends and have also met some amazing business owners.
