Learn2Code - Build a Phone App (11-15 Years of Age)

  • This location is shown only to members

What we do:

This 4 hour workshop teaches children how to become digital creators by working together, use technology and write their first lines of code to build a phone app.

Initially, children will learn how computer programs work and understand the fundamental building blocks of everyday computer programs (eg. arguments, methods, logic, if/else, loops, etc.).

After understanding the coding fundamentals through smaller projects, children will move on to building and coding their own phone app.

The course is taught in a guided learn-by-doing environment. During each session children can experiment with code, make and learn from mistakes and immediately apply every new lesson to a concrete projet.

In short, we give your child a fundamental understanding of programming and the matching coding skills with the goal of building a functional phone app.

What we cover:

This is a hands-on class where children will be writing code, work together and collaborate to build a functional phone application as part of the class.

To keep this course as independent from hardware requirements as possible we will be using App Inventor, a coding environment developed at Google and MIT, that can be used with almost all computers (Macs, Windows, etc.).

We will test the phone apps on a phone emulator and on real Android phones.

Who we are:

We are two web developers who are passionate about teaching coding and technology to people of all ages.

After working for big companies (Microsoft, PayPal, eBay), successful startups (Jana, peerTransfer) and schools (Kamehameha Schools, Hawaii) we started teaching coding classes at the best universities in the country (Harvard, Brown University, RISD, Carnegie Mellon).

We now use our background in education, startups and coding to teach children what can be possible by learning how to code and using the many software development tools available.

Has a 2015 date been published yet?

Excellent starting point for programming. Marco and Ken have a great understanding of teaching especially for children. I was impressed with how well they have developed their curriculum and learning environment. Seeing Ken follow up with a younger student who was reaching a boiling point and redirect him back into a productive session was quite informative.

    Marco & Ken;
it's my pleasure to meet you both, my boy very enjoy the class, we would like to continue the class, are you plan to do this class regular base, like having class every two weeks (saturday), or count each 2 months as one session. each session has different learning goal. so, kids will able continue to learn more new coding related stuff.

Thanks for the kind words Les. If you know any other parents who think coding education for kids is important, please share our meetup group with them :)

      Aloha,
      Marco

Would my children need any programming experience? They use computers daily but this would be an introduction to programming for them. Is this an appropriate venue?

    • Ken M.

Hi Greg - Children don't need to have any prior coding background for this course. We'll get everyone up to speed and having fun coding in no time :)

      Aloha,
      Ken

Are parents encouraged/required to stay and help? Do we pay for our children only or both parent and child? Thanks for setting this up.
