Dear Students

We have already completed 3 classes and this is going to be our last one for this semester. This first semester acted as a pilot experiment for us in order to determine how we can make best use of your time. We have improved the online experience and we are actively pursuing better solutions. The most important lesson learned was that each class must be self-contained and not depend on previous ones, so that people can attend them even when they miss one.

In the last class we will present a different method for making predictions on the airline dataset, with matrix factorization techniques. These techniques are used extensively in recommendation systems. Instead of R we will use Graphlab (http://graphlab.org/) a very powerful tool for machine learning. Our class will be based on the material presented here

This topic will give us the opportunity to jump into the KDD cup 2012 contest which will be taught in the next semester.
