The StartEd Seminars #4: Brexit Blues? The legal and regulatory implications for Irish SMEs.

Much has been written about how Brexit will be detrimental to the Irish economy as a whole, but what are the specific implications for the SME sector? The fourth StartEd seminar will look at the legal and regulatory factors that small and medium-sized businesses in Ireland will have to consider once the UK leaves the European Union.

The seminar - which is supported by Enterprise Ireland - will be followed by a pizza & beer networking event, and it will be hosted in Dogpatch Labs' iconic Vaults event space. The seminar will commence with a series of talks followed by an extended Q&A.

Paul White, William Fry

Paul is a Partner in William Fry's Corporate Group, with a focus on startup companies/SMEs and advising on the legal issues you will face as your company grows and develops. Paul will discuss the impact of Brexit from an Irish legal and business perspective, and consequent company law issues and investment challenges post-Brexit.

Niamh Hall, FR Kelly

Niamh is a solicitor and trade mark attorney with over 15 years’ experience at the cutting edge of intellectual property protection. Niamh works with some of Ireland’s biggest brands and with a host of international household names on protecting and enforcing their intellectual property assets. She has a wealth of experience in designing scalable strategies to take businesses from start-up to success in the most cost effective manner. Niamh will focus on the potential impact of Brexit on intellectual property rights, with a particular focus on trade mark protection and brands.

Conall Geraghty, Mason Hayes & Curran

Conall is an associate in the Mason Hayes Corporate team. He advises Irish and international clients on all aspects of the corporate life cycle from incorporating a company in Ireland to selling a business to international investors. Conall assists start-ups, founders and emerging companies with funding rounds and taking investment. His clients in this area include alumni of start-up accelerators such as NDRC, Wayra and Dogpatch Labs. While Conall will also consider the general implications of Brexit, he will also dive deeper on the potential implications to Irish SMEs in the fintech and software sectors.

Aidan Sweeney, IBEC

As Ibec’s senior executive for government, enterprise and regulatory affairs, Aidan’s focus is on growing enterprise and entrepreneurship, public procurement, the better regulation agenda and ensuring Ireland is a hub for innovation, creativity and start-ups. He represents Ibec on the Irish Government’s SME procurement advisory group, the high level group on business regulation and Dublin City Council’s Finance SPC. Aidan will provide the perspective of IBEC and its over 7,500 members on the challenges for Ireland's SMEs in light of Brexit, where next for regulation in the context of Brexit and what assistance could be provided to SMEs in these uncertain times.

After the talks, we will have an extended Q&A session, where the panelists will be joined by Anne Lanigan of Enterprise Ireland.
