Return to Normalcy

Hello everyone. An update on the status of this group:

It's been a while since we held an official meetup. In that time, the previous organizer for the group, Andrew Frankel, had to step down due to other obligations. There was a window of time where the group was officially leaderless, and someone else took ownership of it, and began using the group primarily for a forum of political discussion. Chris was not affiliated with Less Wrong in any way, and we actually have a general taboo against political discussion.

Our focus is on the development of rationality techniques, and politics has a way of making rational discourse more difficult. This is not to say that we never talk about politics, but that when we do so, we take extreme caution to pay attention to our own biases. (We also usually end up regretting it - it often results in a lot of heated discussion but nobody changing their mind or learning anything)

Andrew Frankel got in touch with representatives and had them transfer organizer/mod privileges to me. We apologize for the confusion, both to old members who were confused by the sudden political turn, and newcomers who aren't sure what the group's about.

Future Use of the Meetup Group

A lot of people find our group, see that there have been no recent meetups, and assume the group is inactive.  This isn't actually the case - we do most of our communication via a private mailing list, and use the group when we want to hold large public meetups for newcomers to attend. We haven't done so in a while, but we plan to start doing so soon. We'll make an announcement as soon as we have finalized plans.

We hold weekly meetups at a private residence. We don't post that information publicly, but anyone on this meetup group who is not on our google group is welcome to send me an e-mail asking to join.
