Meetup details changed: March 2009 MeetUp

From: Stephanie T.
Sent on: Wednesday, February 18, 2009 10:45 PM
I've updated this Meetup.

Today, Wednesday, 2/18/09, tea aficionados Stephanie, Mary and Jonnie, went to check out SweeTea?s in preparation for the March MeetUp. This is my (Stephanie?s) report. Mary and Jonnie feel free to add your comments.

Parking: Likely you will be arriving at SweeTea?s after having turned West onto W 25th Avenue from the El Camino. It will be in the first block on the left. You will not see it from the street as it is tucked into a semi private plaza with several other storefronts. Immediately start looking for street parking. Both sides of this block and the next block have free, 2 hour parking. At the end of the first block is a 4 way stop. The blocks directly to your left and right have one hour parking ? don?t park there. At the 4 way stop, if you turn left then turn right immediately into the alley behind the stores (there is a small blue public parking sign), there is free public parking there.

Since there are 24 of us signed up for this event, you may want to consider carpooling. I started a carpooling forum on the site, check it out ! I will be driving up from S San Jose.

Tea Room: The tearoom is tiny. It is pleasantly decorated. We had matching china and nice linens today ? lot of flowers. There is definitely a feminine flavor. The ?gift shop? is not really a gift shop, proper, but shelves along the wall displaying teas and gifts for sale. We will be able to browse the shelves while we are seated for our meal. The restroom is nice but just inside the curtain to the kitchen on the right.

The owner was not in today when we visited. I will contact her next week regarding how the seating will be set up and other details. Once I speak with her again, I will finalize all the event details and post them. I will ask each of you to review them and update your RSVP accordingly.

Menu: The actual menu will not be available for us until March, as SweeTea?s updates their menu monthly. I will not post the menu as I have the link to their site in the event description. Click on it to go to their website and view the menu. If I can confirm what our specific menu is, I will let you know.

We will be having the Royal Tea. The Royal Tea includes; 2 sandwiches (8 finger sandwiches), 2 savories (each is one to two bites), small salad of the day, seasonal fruit, scone with lemon curd and cream, 3 petite desserts (I will insist one of these be chocolate for us). We will have bottomless pots of tea as well.

We will pick 4 teas for all of us to drink. I was going to choose one of their special blend black teas, the iron goddess oolong, a green tea ? probably the sencha and then an herbal (no caffeine). If you have a tea suggestion, I would love to hear it. I saw their tea menu for the first time today and they would not let me take one home. They said they will email me that list.

Today, Mary, Jonnie and I had cucumber, artichoke and curried chicken salad sandwiches. We agreed they were very good. The scones were almond cherry. The salad was mixed greens, walnuts, and mandarin oranges with a vinaigrette dressing. The desserts were chocolate decadence mini cake and fruit tartlets. The seasonal fruit was grapes. The savories were a bite size quiche and a bite size mushroom tart. We did not have the royal tea today. Jonnie had the Queen?s Tea, Mary and I had the Luncheon Tea.

I told Julita to serve all of us water, but I think I am going to change that due to lack of room on the table. If you like water with your meal, please tell the server when you are served.

COST: The cost for the tea itself is $19.95. Tax is $1.45. Tip will be added and is 18% or $3.85. The fee to use Amazon Payments is $1.03. The grand total is $26.28.

I have to give her credit card information and a final head count one week before or Saturday, March 14th, 2009. So, I MUST have your payment in full by midnight, Friday, March 13, 2009. I have to pay her for the number of people I give her on March 14th, 2009. NO REFUNDS.

IMPORTANT!! NO REFUNDS - However, you can have someone go by and pick up your meal (during the event) or send someone in your place. The RSVPs are full right now. It is not inconceivable we will have a waiting list. IF you find you cannot attend and have already paid AND if someone from the waiting list CAN take your place and pay via Amazon payments, I will be more than happy to refund your money (including Amazon fee).

MISC: Be sure to make a note to bring your camera to SweeTea?s. The d?cor there will make a lovely backdrop for our shots. Don?t forget to share your photos by uploading them to the MeetUp site afterwards. Those of you camera shy for any reason, just give those of us with a camera the heads up ? no problem.

Mary, Jonnie and I were delighted with the area SweeTea?s is located. We had already spent some time shopping in downtown San Mateo but would have liked to poke around the shops there too. Consider arriving an hour or two early and do some window shopping (or more)!
