AMERICANS UNITED FOR SEPARATION OF CHURCH AND STATE
FORMS PHOENIX CHAPTER
Americans United for Separation of Church and State, a national organization founded in 1947 by religious, political, and educational leaders, now has a newly formed Greater Phoenix Chapter. The chapter will hold its first public event April 24 at the Scottsdale Cottonwoods Resort, 6160 N. Scottsdale Rd. in Scottsdale. This is a free event open to the public. Doors open at noon and the program begins at 1:00p.m.
Speaking will be Robert Boston,
senior policy analyst and assistant director of communications for Americans
United. He also serves as assistant editor of AU's monthly magazine Church
& State. Boston is recognized as a leading writer and researcher on
church-state topics such as religion in public schools, tax aid to sectarian education
and religious freedom. He is the author of three books: Close
Encounters with the Religious Right: Journeys into the Twilight Zone of
Religion and Politics, The Most Dangerous Man in America? Pat Robertson
and the Rise of the Christian Coalition, and Why the Religious Right Is
Wrong About Separation of Church and State.
In addition, Boston often serves as a spokesperson for Americans United and has appeared on MSNBC's “Countdown with Keith Olbermann,” CNN's “Anderson Cooper,” Fox News Channel's “O’Reilly Factor” and other programs.
Also speaking will be Arizona Rep. Kyrsten Sinema. Now in her third term, she is the ranking Democrat on the House Appropriations Committee and the ranking Democrat on the House Judiciary Committee. Sinema recently authored the book Unite and Conquer: How to Build Coalitions that Win and Last. She holds both a law degree and a Master’s degree in Social Work from Arizona State University, and is currently pursuing her Ph.D. at ASU.
Americans United is dedicated to defending our most precious freedom—the freedom of conscience and religious belief.
AU brings together over 125,000 individuals of varying religious and non-religious viewpoints to guard the constitutional guarantee of religious freedom. Our primary goal is to educate the American public regarding the importance of religious freedom through the separation of church and state.
