OpenStack: Building a Private Cloud & Tech Regulations

OpenStack: Building a Private Cloud & Tech Regulations

Details

Join us at ReachLocal in Woodland Hills for two exciting talks by their staff members.

#1: ReachLocal Private Cloud (RLPC)
Private Clouds for the Enterprise with OpenStack (RLPC) As consumption (sanctioned or otherwise) of public clouds like AWS and RackSpace by enterprise customers has accelerated, there is an inflection point on the price-performance curve where it makes sense for an enterprise to rehash their virtualization strategy and deploy public-cloud-style control surfaces for their internal customers. This talk speaks to private cloud deployment with a bent towards enterprise concerns: a walkthrough of the systems lifecycle history at ReachLocal and discussion of configuration/deployment of OpenStack in an enterprise environment.

Eric Hankins
Eric is the Director of Infrastructure at ReachLocal. He is responsible for the global data facilities footprint across several domestic and international locations, inclusive of physical plant, systems, network, storage, and the various operating systems running atop it. He began his career as a security-focused sysadmin, with subsequent deep experience in the realm of pure telecommunications network engineering in several tech startups across the telecom, aerospace, and Internet industries. Eric is a college dropout from the sticks with nothing to lose and everything on the line.

#2: Tech Regulation Blitzkrieg
As companies derive business value from consumer information, there is an increased focus on data regulation and consumer privacy. This talk will provide an overview of regulations by industry vertical (i.e., Healthcare, Financial, Defense, etc.), geography (International, Federal, State), and data type (Social Security, Credit data, etc.). Focus will be on recent cases (enforcement actions) as a result of breaches and privacy lapses. Regulator actions covered will include the Federal Trade Commission (FTC), and Office of Civil Rights (OCR), State Attorney Generals, and others.

Mikhael Felker
Mikhael is the Director of Regulatory & Compliance at ReachLocal. He is responsible for data regulation and privacy issues, including PCI Compliance.
He has worked as a security engineering lead, lecturer, researcher, tech writer, consultant and non-profit board member. Prior to RL, he worked at YP.com, UCLA Medical Center, and three different FFRDCs (Aerospace, SEI/CERT, and Sandia National Labs). Active in the community, he has served on the Board of Directors for ISSA Los Angeles and PMI Los Angeles. His written work has been featured in conferences, research papers, and journal articles. He received his MS in Information Security Policy and Management from Carnegie Mellon University and a BS in Computer Science from UCLA.

As usual we will have raffle books from O’Reilly Media, and we also have a RASPBERRY PI to give away, so bring your business card for the raffle!

ReachLocal will be sponsoring food and drinks as well (thanks, ReachLocal!)
