SPECIAL EVENT - Up Close and Personal with Dr. Richard Carrier

  • Nov 14, 2012 · 6:45 PM
  • This location is shown only to members

WAITLIST ONLY LEFT ...if you have said yes but can't make it please canx your name.

LAAG is delighted to host this special event - an INFORMAL evening with Dr. Richard Carrier. Want to know if Jesus ever existed?...Carrier is a leading authority on the subject and says no!

(LAAGers coming to this event will get a FREE ticket to our event in association with the Centre For Inquiry/BHA on Nov 16th,  ...otherwise 16th Nov is £7 ...or £5 for BHA).

This event is rather special, as although he'll be doing formal talks whilst in the UK, Richard (and his partner Jen) said they want to informally "hang out, drink, and chat with you as much as you like". After seeing our site he said "I really want to absorb some UK atheist sanity"

I'm sure you guys can provide that, as well as a warm welcome to them both :-))) Our friends at CLHG have been kind enough to invite us to their events and naturally they are also welcome to attend ours, and add more sanity!

Should be an enjoyable, .... and rather unique evening!

Many of you probably know Richard Carrier from his blogspots: freethought and previously

Richard Carrier is a world-renowned author and speaker. As a professional historian, published philosopher, and prominent defender of the American freethought movement, Dr. Carrier has appeared on national television defending sound historical methods and the ethical worldview of secular naturalism. As an advocate of atheism and metaphysical naturalism, he has published articles in books, journals and magazines, and also features on the documentary film The God Who Wasn't There, where he is interviewed about his doubts on the historicity of Jesus. His books and articles have also received international attention.

He holds a Ph.D. from Columbia University in ancient history, specializing in the intellectual history of Greece and Rome, particularly ancient philosophy, religion, and science, with emphasis on the origins of Christianity and the use and progress of science under the Roman empire. He is best known as the author of Sense and Goodness without GodNot the Impossible Faith, and Why I Am Not a Christian, and a major contributor to The Empty TombThe Christian DelusionThe End of Christianity, and Sources of the Jesus Tradition, as well as writer and editor-in-chief (now emeritus) for the Secular Web, and for his copious work in history and philosophy online and in print. He currently contributes to The God Contention; a web site comparing and contrasting various worldviews.

Lovely informal evening (even if Adrian proved I was predictable). Looking forward to Richard's books coming out.

Dr. Carrier was extremely knowledgeable and eloquent, but also very accommodating and friendly. Every question asked was answered with gusto!. A fun and relaxed evening with a lovely friendly vibe, great to have CLHG people too, all rationalists coming together!
