MASTERCLASS TODAY with Peter Boghossian, at 17:15 : Peter has kindly agreed to give us regular time to ask questions directly, live, via 'Google Hangouts'. First session today (Saturday) at 17:15, RSVP HERE. Don't be shy, join in! (or just listen in - we'll need to invite you to the conversation with your email address - just email back to this message)
(Perhaps some of you have had time to read Dr. Peter Boghossian's book ‘A Manual for Creating Atheists’. It gives method & examples of how to start meaningful 'interventions' against the faith virus. (There are of course other methods to engage with the religious but personally I have found this the easiest and least confrontational to put into practice). Despite it's title, and though the end result could/should well be a 'conversion', it's about helping the religious to value belief revision & enable them to develop a mechanism that lets them differentiate reality from make-believeland. Dawkins says it's "essential for nonbelievers who want to do more than carp about religion, but to weaken it's odious grip on the world)
( Here's the Amazon link to get the book either hard copy or Kindle (The Kindle plugin can be downloaded for free to use on a PC or Mac - and it's instant!) : AMAZON LINK)
OTHER UPCOMING MEETUPS & EVENTS:
1.DISCUSSION/TALK: Mon Dec 9th: "What is an atheist religion?" (Rev!) Andy Pakula explains Unitarianism
LAAG member, Andrew posted " Can anyone help me understand how Unitarianism can be of assistance to any rational atheist?" Come to the talk and find out why some atheists seem to need/want the structure of a religion...(HERE's the link for RSVP)
2. URGENT PROTEST TUES DEC 10th: "You're a woman you can't sit here". This is proposed here, in the UK! At Universities! Please join us on Tues Dec 10th, 17:00 for a protest. Richard Dawkins may be speaking ...not confirmed yet (and not quite so exciting I know ;-), but I shall also be speaking at the protest - it's just too important an issue to ignore, on so many levels - I'm sure you'll agree!)
3. PAAAARTY! ONLY A FEW PLACES LEFT, FRI DEC 13th - This year, Celebrate Reason (with a bit of LAAG irreverence of course;-)) at our X-myarse Social Celebration: RSVP HERE. (NEW MEMBERS - welcome to the group! .. you'll be warmly included (the natives are friendly ;-)), so do join in these events without trepidation, this one is likely to be a hoot! :-))
LAAGers' welcome you...get it? Oh please yourselves ;-)
Don't know how? Worry not - we’ve set up a permanent reference guide - it'll give you (quick and easy!) step-by-step help on how to take part in our frank and vivacious online debates (e.g how to post pics etc): LINK (If you need any further help, feel free to email Georgi)
OTHER RECOMMENDED SITES
1/ LAAGer Andrew Beckingham runs an excellent site on Facebook, with the same objectives and M.O as LAAG. It's called Atheism - Evidence & Reason
Andrew says "My objective is to 'Assertively and courteously communicate with believers, agnostics and atheists pointing out what we can know, how we can know it and how we can find comfort and opportunity based on evidence'. I don't believe that being rude persuades anyone, but being assertive can persuade many". Do check it out: https://www.facebook.com/AtheismEvidenceReason
2/ “What was the name of Darwin’s famous book? A. Nobody is Gonna Make a Monkey Out of Me B. The Origin of Species C. Top Banana in the Jungle.
Find out on Monday when this link goes live! This is an excerpt from “33 jaw-droppingly bad multiple-choice questions from Accelerated Christian Education”. - Our Speaker in February, Jonny Scaramanga, has been campaining against ACE (a fundamentalist Christian teaching programme in schools called "Accelerated Christian Education"). Let's assist him in exposing it - please share FB/Tweet etc !
Please don’t be intimidated to join in with meetups or in the forum, as whilst we encourage frank discussion, we also aim to be a friendly and constructive group.
Hopefully you can make it along to an event sometime, but please don't be discouraged if you can't participate, as even silent membership is helpful …you’re giving constructive atheism & rationalism a stronger voice just by being part of the group :-). But we do have events to suit almost all tastes and social events are a good way to get to know people - the NEW MEMBERS event had a great response, as have our end-of-month Sunday 'VICE' socials ;-) ...more events are on the board.
Thanks all, for your participation/membership/activism, & good humour as always.
Have a great month, (all feedback always welcome)
