We Steal Secrets: The Story of Wikileaks + Q&A with director Alex Gibney

The London European Club invites you to the Frontline Club preview screening of the film We Steal Secrets: The story of Wikileaks directed by Alex Gibney which will be followed by a Q&A session with the director.

In 2010, WikiLeaks and its sources used the power of the internet to usher in what was for some a new era of transparency, and for others the beginnings of a new information war. Julian Assange. Bradley Manning. Collateral murder. Cablegate. WikiLeaks. These people and terms exploded into the public consciousness by fundamentally changing the way democratic societies deal with privacy, secrecy, and the right to information, perhaps for generations to come.

Academy Award winner Alex Gibney tells the story of what happens when an incredibly small group of people decide to break open the intelligence vaults of the most powerful nation on the planet. We Steal Secrets: The Story of WikiLeaks explores how this enormous trove of classified U.S. data was leaked and the impact the documents have had on international events.

I went to see this film with an open mind, and it was really interesting. I think, in a hindsight, Assange probably regrets that he "revealed" himself to the public ( I think he wanted a bit of publicity and stardom after getting access to all these documents and files). He should have remain anonymous, like Banksy in the art world, with only few people knowing how he looked like and who he was. If he had done that, he could still remain free and been able to publish his explosive files as an independent source. Unfortunately, his vanity got in a way...But still, we should applaud people like him, Manning and Snowden who have a courage to speak out, even if it may cost them their freedom. Thank you for organizing this event Maja; I could not join you in a pub afterwards, as I was going on a quite intensive Rambler's walk with a very early start next day.

Great evening. The film was fun and informative, great cast of characters, although it didnt focus enough on what wikileaks is about. It is legitimate that the director want to cover in the film how Assange is mixing his personal issues with those of the organisation but, precisely for that, its contradictory that the film focuses on his persona so much... maybe its the director being opportunistic, some parts were hollywood rubbish. Very enjoyable to see how in flames were Assange fans during the Q&A! And thanks everybody for the good chat afterwards in the pub, specially Maja for organising and your thoughts on editorialising and the impact of the leaks!

The documentary was not balanced which the audience of course spotted. But it served as a good reminder of the timeline of events and the impact of Wikileaks. All my stars go to the lovely company from fellow Europeanswho stayed for the post meetup chat.

Was a bit surprised to find that these events are recorded and put on web. May be that is mentioned in the blurb somewhere. But I feel it should be prominently drawn to new attendees attention.
