Walk length 10 miles/16km approx. Circular.
Staring from Cheshunt station this walk explorers the waterways and woodlands around the Lee Valley and Waltham Abbey.
Much of this walk covers parts of the Lee Valley Park which is a 10,000 acre green linear space running from Northeast London through Essex and Hertfordshire and consists of lakes, waterways, woods, open spaces and scenic views. The walk passes through some ancient woodland, such as Alder Wood (used to produce charcoal for the gunpowder mills) and Galleyhill wood (part of Epping Forest).
Some features on the walk include a stop to see The Abbey Church of Waltham Holy Cross and St Laurence and the adjacent ruined remains of an Augustian Abbey founded by King Henry II and destroyed in 1540 under the dissolution of the monasteries. A stone marks what is claimed to be the final resting place of King Harold II (Saxon King killed at the Battle of Hastings, and was Earl of Essex).
The walk passes close to the old gunpowder mills, where gunpowder was produced from the 1600s and was important in gunpowder and explosives manufacture for 300 years, the site is now a museum.
Monkham's Hill provides some fine views of London and is also the site of a WW1 gun emplacement.
Lunch and Finish: Bring water and a snack lunch. This walk should finish at about 4.30pm and include a snack lunch stop and pub stop at the end, however the time may be earlier or later than this depending on the weather and pace (we have a relaxed pace which includes sightseeing and photography).
