Rossini comes to Peckham this summer, as Pop Up Opera take over theAsylum Chapel.
Pop-up Opera is an innovative touring opera company dedicated to making opera enjoyable and inviting. The aim is to broaden the appeal of opera by taking it into unusual spaces and making it fun, fresh and intimate!
London for Less has already seen them Pop Up before in this incredible building off the Old Kent Road and it was the most memorable setting for an event we've seen in years. Check out the final photos on this page for a flavour!
Sung in Italian with captions in English, 'Italian Girl in Algiers' will mesh this comedy caper with Las Vegas glamour, for laughs and song against a backdrop of glitz.

To Pop-Up Opera, the environment becomes an important part of what they create. They're even laying on a pop-up bar serving craft beers, ale and cider, which is apt since the Chapel was once part of one of London's largest almshouse complexes.
The performance will finish around 7. 30pm.
NOTE - we will attend a second performance of 'Italian Girl in Algiers on Thursday 21st July at Hackney Wick.

'L'Italiana in Algeri' (The Italian Girl in Algiers)
Rossini meets Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas!
Against a backdrop of glitz and grit at the Algiers Hotel, Lindoro is down on his luck and in debt to the Algiers' corrupt and extravagant owner, Mustafa.
Lindoro's girlfriend, Isabella, arrives in Vegas under the pretence of auditioning as a show-girl to try and get Lindoro out of this mess.
Mustafa is enraptured by the headstrong Isabella: but will she be seduced by his power and money?
The surreal and dangerous world of Las Vegas breathes new life into Rossini's absurd exotic comedy, as love and fidelity compete.
'L'italiana in Algeri' premiered in Venice on 22 May 1813. The music is characteristic of Rossini's stye, remarkable for its fusion of sustained, manic energy with elegant, pristine melodies.

Now known as ‘Asylum’, the part-ruined Georgian chapel is now flexible project space. The chapel is sandwiched between the almshouses located in Caroline Gardens, on Asylum Road – named for the buildings’ original name Licenced Victuallers’ Benevolent Institution Asylum. Although named an asylum, which immediately makes you assume residences for the mentally ill, the site was actually a retirement home for former pub landlords.
The chapel was built in 1827 and 1833, with 10,000 people coming to the opening ceremony of the asylum site. As well as an organ by Messrs Bovington and Sons, the chapel featured stone and marble tablets honouring donors and supporters, most of which still exist today.
