Film viewing: The Immortalists

Details

The BFI (http://www.bfi.org.uk/about-bfi) London Film festival this year includes the UK premiere of the film "The Immortalists" (http://www.imdb.com/title/tt3267194/). The showing on Saturday 18th October in the Ritzy Cinema, Brixton, provides a good opportunity for members of London Futurists to view the film and then discuss it afterwards.

To book tickets in advance, visit the BFI web page for the film (https://whatson.bfi.org.uk/lff/Online/default.asp?BOparam::WScontent::loadArticle::permalink=immortalists). Tickets cost £13.75 per person. (Note: as of 8th October, all these tickets are sold out, according to the cinema website.)

If you can't make it to the film viewing itself, you're still welcome to join us in the Prince of Wales, Brixton (http://www.pow-london.com/), just across the street from the Ritzy, from around 5.30pm onwards. During the discussion we'll be joined by David Avarado (http://www.imdb.com/name/nm4944180/?ref_=tt_ov_dr) and Jason Sussberg (http://www.imdb.com/name/nm3430044/?ref_=tt_ov_dr), the co-directors of the film.

The Immortalists - A riveting account of two remarkable scientists set on finding a way to prolong life.

‘Cure ageing... or die trying.’ So goes the rallying call of Bill Andrews (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/William_H.Andrews(biologist)), the American scientist searching for a solution to the great inevitable. A health-conscious runner, his approach contrasts sharply with the methods of his British counterpart Aubrey de Grey (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Aubrey_de_Grey), a magnificently bearded, beer-swilling theoretical biologist. The science is fascinating, with complex theories spun out through onscreen animation. And the moral and social implications are certainly meaty.

But it is the characters themselves who are the most compelling element of this film. As we spend time with these radical biologists the personal reasons for their quests emerge, with particularly touching scenes detailing their parental relationships. And, like many a high-functioning brainiac, they possess a cadre of peccadilloes, none more so than de Grey, whose views on polyamory and al fresco lovemaking seamlessly flow into a philosophy that both men share – the absolute and defiant desire to live.

After-film discussion (part 1):

Immediately after the showing of the film, the two co-directors, David Alvarado (http://www.imdb.com/name/nm4944180/?ref_=tt_ov_dr), and Jason Sussberg (http://www.imdb.com/name/nm3430044/?ref_=tt_ov_dr), will be answering questions inside the cinema, Screen 2, from all members of the general public audience in attendance. This is projected to last up till around 5.20pm.

After-film discussion (part 2):

From around 5.30pm, all London Futurists are welcome to join a gathering in the Prince of Wales pub (http://www.pow-london.com/), 467-469 Brixton Road, London SW9 8HH, which is just across the road from the Ritzy cinema.
