Open Data for Development: aspirations and challenges

What are the hopes and aspirations driving open data / open development and what are the challenges and obstacles ahead?

Eliza Anyangwe (Guardian Global Development Professionals Network) hosts a discussion with  Ulrich Atz (Open Data Institute), Heather Leson (OKFNlabs) and Claire Provost (Guardian Global Development) and about Open Data for Development at Mozilla London

Everyone loves the potential of open data for transparency, accountability, innovation, and improved efficiency but what about challenges such as the quality of data sets. Eliza and her panel present a cautionary tale of what could happen if data quality is not addressed.

Nearest tube to MozLDN is Leicester Square, This is served by the Piccadilly line & the western branch of the Northern line. Leave the station using Exit 4. When you get to street level turn left into Cranbourn Street & cross to the other side of the road. Take the first turning on the right into St Martins Lane. Carry on down the right hand side of the street past Noël Coward Theatre, Robert Dyas, and a Starbucks. '101' is a glassy modern office building. If you get to the Duke of York's Theatre you have over shot and need to retrace your steps :)

Hey, I have done a short summary of the points raised at the ICT4D meetup on Open Data for Mozilla below, as they had asked for one. It is open for comments on Google docs, so please do correct, give feedback and add comments. It is here:

I have also written a longer version for my blog too, which deals with some more points below:

This was a great event and was well attended. Really thanks a lot to everyone for making such thoughtful contributions, particularly Eliza and the panelists for sharing their ideas and their perspectives also on their own work. Finally, thanks so much to Mozilla for making it possible and hosting us in their excellent office. Look forward to catching up next time at the upcoming Xmas do!

Please help me. I don't want to arrive on Tuesday 26th telling people "You missed a great event yesterday - on Monday 25th" - but other than posting it here I don't know how to share it - UK-Africa "Challenges and Opportunities for Innovation" http://www.eventbrite.co.uk/e/uk-africa-challenges-and-opportunities-for-innovation-tickets-9401059823 Please forgive me for posting it in the wrong place and help me share it in the right way.

Hey good people, looking forward to seeing as many of you there as possible. The idea is to talk about quality. How to do open data better. If you can't come but want to share something deep and meaningful, tweet me, Tony or Janet will I'm sure will only pass on the more contentious of messages! See you all there. E
