Salisbury [St George's Day] & Stonehenge (day trip)

Details

Let's make a day trip to Salisbury and Stonehenge.
Learn about Salisbury's history, see the Magna Carta (the document the barons forced King John to sign in 1215, limiting the powers of the king and establishing rights for the citizens), visit Salisbury Cathedral, and explore the mysterious stone circle at Stonehenge - 5,000 years of history in one day ...

Today Salisbury will be celebrating St George's Day, England's national day (actually on the previous Thursday, on 23 April), so there will be special entertainment as well.

The cost of £60 includes all transport, entrance charges and guiding fees. You need to bring some extra cash for food and drink and any souvenirs you want to buy.

Meet Mark under the big round clock in London Waterloo train station at 8:45am. I will be wearing an orange scarf, and my mobile number is 07984 257572. Please pay me the £60 in cash when you meet me.

Please check for engineering works by using the TfL website to plan your journey to the meeting place:
http://www.tfl.gov.uk/plan-a-journey

The plan for the day is as follows:

  • 9:15am Train leaves Waterloo
  • 10:45am Train arrives Salisbury
  • 11am-12 noon A colourful pageant meanders its way around the Guidhall Square with gravediggers and their very own plague cart, jesters, stilt walkers, wandering minstrels, battling knights and walkabout dragons! The Salisbury Giant and Hob Nob will also put in an appearance.
  • 12-2pmEither: 12-1:30pm Guided walking tour with a local blue-badge guide. The theme is "St George, the Dragon & Medieval Salisbury"Or: 12 noon Battle of St George in Market Place; 1pm Trial of St George vs the Dragon in the Guildhall
  • 2-3pm Visit Salisbury Cathedral and see the Magna Carta
  • 3-3:30pm Travel to Stonehenge
  • 3:30-5:30pm Visit Stonehenge
  • 6:00-6:30pm Travel back to central Salisbury
  • Walk through the water meadows
  • 7:27pm Train leaves Salisbury
  • 8:59pm Train arrives London Waterloo

If you are bringing a smartphone or tablet with you and have your own earphones and wish to hear the Stonehenge commentary in English, I recommend you to download the free "Stonehenge Audio Tour" from your app store ( https://itunes.apple.com or https://play.google.com/store ) and listen to this while you walk around the site (you will hear it better, you will not need to carry around an extra handset, and it will avoid possible delays).
