London MUG #2: MongoDB's new Java Driver and Sharding Fundamentals

Save the date for February's London MongoDB User Group!

Due to unforeseen circumstances we have a change of plan for this month's London MongoDB User Group -- but we think you'll like what we have in store.

Unfortunately, we have had to postpone the panel discussion for a later date due to the availability of our panelists -- but instead we have got two great presentations lined up for you.

Trisha Gee -- Java Evangelist for 10gen -- will be giving a Very Rough Guide to the New Java Driver for MongoDB.
The existing Java driver is one of the more... mature... MongoDB drivers. This year 10gen aims to move to a 3.0 version, with a New Improved API. This session covers the design goals for the new driver, and may contain a sneak peek into the new fluent API.

Sam Weaver -- Solutions Architect for 10gen -- will present on Sharding Fundamentals.
MongoDB was designed for humongous amounts of data, with the ability to scale horizontally via sharding. In this session, we’ll look at MongoDB’s approach to partitioning data, and the architecture of a sharded system. We’ll walk you through configuration of a sharded system, and look at how data is balanced across servers and requests are routed.

Interested in Java? Don't miss our free online training -- MongoDB for Java Developers Developers, starts on February 25th. Get more info and register for free here: ow.ly/hQ

Food for the London MongoDB User Group comes this month from our favourite burrito slingers, Poncho 8.

Poncho 8 do the best burritos in London according to the Evening Standard, so we are very grateful for their excellent food and great service! Check them out here.

If your company is hiring MongoDB devs, get in touch with the London MongoDB User Group organisers about sponsoring the food for the meet up.

Is Sam Weavers Sharding presentation online yet? Pointers welcome - one of my fellow students on the MongoDB for (Python) Programmers Online course is asking if this is going to be covered in the final 2 weeks. Think it is, but a pointer to a good summary like Sam's may also help.

Really enjoyed the meetup - both presentations were great.

The presentation of the new Java Driver was thought-provoking, and IMO the new fluent interface looks very nice and in keeping with the current Java library trends (e.g Guava, new Collections API). I would have liked the word 'find' at the end of the find-like example API i.e. filter(query).findAll() or filter(query).findOne(), however this is a small detail, and I'm keen to see a final API (or even an Early Access one :))

The sharding talk was also very interesting - I never knew so much sharding functionality came with Mongo 'out of the box', and it looks (at least from the presentation) very simple to setup!

    Thanks to all involved!

The new java client looks interesting but does not affect me as a .Net developer. The talk on Sharding was excellent.

Very good, shows the shape of some of the changes to the syntax that may get to us Python users later on.

Is the map correct? When typing "Zetland House" in google maps, it shows totally different place: http://goo.gl/maps/0TXpc

Please, clarify address where the event will take place

Yes, thank you! :) In fact, I already figured out where is it, but this will be helpful for others.
