Coding Dojo on Section 1.1

Details

SICP is a classic programming text (even if you don't program in lisp) and the breadth and depth of the ideas in the book will certainly improve your craft. I typically find it easier to learn such things when I'm doing it with others, hence the study group.

Each week, a few days before we meet up, we'll propose a section of the book and video lectures to cover. When we meet, we'll hold a "coding dojo" to work through the book's problems and/or exercises from MIT's OCW materials.

In this way, we can all make consistent progress together, and it won't be a big deal if anyone has to miss a week - so long said person continues with the reading!

Coding Dojo on Section 1.1

This week we're working through the first section of the first chapter: Section 1.1: The Elements of Programming

Please read through it before coming. You may also wish to watch the Video Lecture for this section (http://ocw.mit.edu/courses/electrical-engineering-and-computer-science/6-001-structure-and-interpretation-of-computer-programs-spring-2005/video-lectures/1a-overview-and-introduction-to-lisp/).

We'll be working on problems 1.6, 1.7, and 1.8 (and I may bring a surprise or two). Please do give me feedback on the pace and amount of material we're covering. I'm happy to move faster or slower as the group desires.

Please remember to bring a laptop with racket (http://racket-lang.org/) installed.

15 - 20min: Quick run-down of the material in the book.

40 - 60min: Working on and discussing problems from the book.

Hope to see you there!
