Day Trip to Eastbourne with walk to Beachy Head
http://photos1.meetupstatic.com/photos/event/3/3/e/2/600_400273282.jpeg
Sunday 14 September
Join us for amazing day out by the coast.
We will have a walk and meditation. There will be an option for the group to split in two for those who like a longer walk and those who like to take it a bit easier ! The longer route will be a walk to Beachy Head whilst option B will be a shorter walk along the coast and a short bus ride to re-group on the cliff. Have a nice walk around and light lunch in a café or in the famous Tiger Inn pub where we can try local beer.
Please note, the long walk to Beachy Head is around 10km there and we will catch a bus back to the town in time for some more exploring.
A little more info about the Short Walk.
I (Odette) will be leading the short walk as I am recovering from an ankle injury so I will be taking things a little easier ! It will be an opportunity for anyone wishing to have a slower day with time to relax, sit on the beach, watch the waves and enjoy the fresh sea air. We will also walk, just a little slower and for a shorter distance, perhaps a few miles. We will join the group for lunch and to enjoy the wonderful cliff top views. We will catch a local bus to Beachy Head and back. Please bring some cash for this.

About Eastbourne and Beachy head.
http://photos3.meetupstatic.com/photos/event/3/4/3/c/600_400273372.jpeg
Eastbourne is a large town, seaside resort, and borough in East Sussex (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/East_Sussex), on the south coast of England, 17 miles (27 km) east of Brighton (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Brighton).
Eastbourne is located immediately east of Beachy Head (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Beachy_Head), the highest chalk sea cliff in Great Britain (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Great_Britain) and part of the South Downs National Park (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/South_Downs_National_Park). With a seafront consisting largely of Victorian (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Victorian_architecture) hotels, the pier (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Eastbourne_Pier), and a Napoleonic (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Napoleonic_era) era fort and military museum (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Eastbourne_Redoubt).
Eastbourne was developed by the Duke of Devonshire (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Duke_of_Devonshire) in 1800 from four separate hamlets. It has a growing population, a broad economic base, and is home to companies in a wide range of industries.
Beachy Head is a chalk (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Chalk) headland (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Headlands_and_bays) in Southern England, close to the town of Eastbourne (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Eastbourne,_East_Sussex) in the county of East Sussex (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/East_Sussex), immediately east of the Seven Sisters (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Seven_Sisters,_Sussex). The cliff (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cliff) there is the highest chalk (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Chalk) sea cliff in Britain, rising to 162 metres (531 ft) above sea level. The peak allows views of the south east coast from Dungeness (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dungeness_(headland)) in the east, to Selsey Bill (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Selsey_Bill) in the west. Its height has also made it one of the most notorious suicide spots (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_suicide_sites) in the world.
The name Beachy Head has nothing to do with a beach, but is in fact a corruption of the original French words Beauchef (13th Century) and Beaucheif (14th Century) meaning "beautiful head(land)".
In 1929 Eastbourne bought 4,000 acres (16 km2) of land surrounding Beachy Head at a cost of about £100,000. This investment has saved Beachy Head and the surrounding Downland from development and has led to it becoming a part of the new South Downs National Park.
The cliff faces southward and is subjected to fierce gales and erosion from the sea. The constant erosion of the old chalk face helps to maintain the whiteness of the cliffs by revealing the clean white chalk underneath.
Parts of the cliffs are eroding up to a metre every year. Record falls were recorded in January 1999 caused by unusually heavy rain and large waves and believed to be the biggest sudden loss of British coastline in recent years. A further major landslide in April 2001 destroyed the well known local landmark known as the Devils Chimney.
