Using Custom Post Types
Keith Devon introduces you to the world of custom post types, a feature that revolutionised WordPress. He looks at why and how to use them in your WordPress themes.
Doors open at 6:45pm. Talks begin at 7:30pm. We can't staff the entrance, so doors will close at 7.40pm sharp.
Excellent subjects. The custom post type intrigues as it can be really useful but seems to have some apparent limitations. My questions are ready.
@Graham, if you send me your questions in advance I will be able to cover them more thoroughly (and not look like an idiot :) ).
I am still in waiting list but I will be in (please)
Sorry Yoosuf, the space is pretty tight so we have to be strict on the list, but keep an eye out for future events, they are planned to be once a month.
Then please make sure the slides and the source code will be available
And I have a question in taxonomy of custom post type
Unfortunately I am not allowed :(
We will be recording the events as usual! Keep your eyes on the group here after the event
Yoosuf, I am unwell and unable to attend therefore you can have my place. I hope that is possible.
Guys there is a waiting list and lots of people that also really want to come, @marsha if you are dropping out the next person on the list will get your space - it's only fair!
@yoosuf Its great that you are keen, but if a place doesn't come up for you there will be other times
Yoosuf - there are, as far as I can see, 11 others ahead of you in the waiting list ---> over there on the right.
What if someone below you decide to just push in front of you would you be happy?
I see, I thought as much but I wasn't sure. Newbie. Definitely next time.
Thanks.
Wow, it looks like we might need a bigger venues for future meetups.
Sorry if all this sounds a bit strict about tomorrow, but we've been given the space on good faith by Headshift, and we need to play the rules there, just like we did with the Telegraph before.
We're looking for larger venues for future meetups, but for now, please bear with us - the waiting list is the fairest option we have right now.
See some of you tomorrow, and hopefully more of you at the next meetup,
C
I was one of the lucky 60 who rsvp'd in time, but just don't seem to appear in the "attended" list for some reason. No matter. Blogged at http://distributedresearch.net/blog/2011/11/18/wordpress-...![]()

I've spotted a couple of interesting things whilst researching the topics mentioned at the talk.
Firstly, David mentioned adding descriptions for your the category pages. These will only display if your theme supports that but it's not too difficult to update your theme so that it will, see http://codex.wordpress.org/Category_Templates![]()
.
Secondly I was adding some descriptions for my link categories and followed the view link, these went to the following
http://mywebsite.com?taxonomy=link_category&term=myca...![]()
![]()
which also does not seem to do anything on mysite, is this a theme issue?
Hi Guys, seo question: just wondered whether you knew of a cool plugin that would rename the title of pages / posts as the h1 tag rather than the default h2 tag without having to change each one manually.
Hi Ollie, you don't necessarily need a plugin to solve this problem. If you are working with the codebase you could use a custm filter or even better just try using the_title('<h1>', '</h1>') from within the loop.
On a side note, changing stuff from H2 to H1 will not necessarily increase your SEO rating these days. Applying good semantic principles to your markup will serve you much better. Search engines will most likely penalise you for overusing <H1> tags on your pages

hope this helps.
Hi Lewis,
Thanks for getting back to me so quickly. Can you explain more about using the_title within the loop?
Many thanks!
Hi ollie, do you have any experience in working with wordpress code or coding experience?
Hi i can do this for u if i require... just message me
loops is part of coding, its a coding terminology, if u knw php this would be really straight forward, check this video out, it talks about loops in wordpress http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=R5wcOGHbNZo![]()
