Commencing with a performance on Udu & Water Drum, this 3hr workshop is a unique experience to sample an African drumming tradition little known in the UK. This workshop is aimed at all those who love and enjoy music making, no experience needed on Udu or Djembe. This is a music sharing workshop where the aim is to play and enjoy music making no matter what your level. The workshop will cover all the basic techniques, hand positions finger strokes & rhythms on Udu. Additionally Eugene will show how Djembe rhythms can be played on the Udu, with the second part of the workshop combining both Udu & Djembe in ensemble playing

The Udu is a clay pot drum that was invented ages ago by Igbo women of Nigeria. Udu means pot in their language, and sounds like udo, their word for peace. The Udu is traditionally played exclusively by women as a ceremonial instrument; but these days you can find men playing it recreationally as well. However, in Nigeria, it is still only women who are the potters.
The Udu is fast becoming a popular percussion instrument in the West and beyond, and if you listen carefully (once you know the unique sound it makes) you can hear it on nappy commercials, wildlife TV documentaries, world music, jazz, Hip-Hop beats and even on a few Hollywood movie soundtracks.
