Hi Dana. That URL does not appear to have an associated page. Also, meetup is using the subject 'Bitcoin Discussion and Q&A with Andreas M. Antonopoulos' but I imagine that your proposed 'BitBase-Irvine' meetup will not be hosting Andreas, correct?

Hi Greg- Sorry here is right link: http://www.meetup.com... I was doing this on my phone and actually did not mean to post the invite on this particular thread! No, this event has nothing to do with Andreas, just a meetup to give hands-on help to Bitcoin newbies (-:

I'll also be releasing the audio to this on my podcast at coinsiderthis.com. Interesting info on NSA surveillance techniques...implications for the security of our Bitcoins?

"The [NSA's Access Network Technology] developers have a clear preference for planting malicious code in BIOS, software located on a computer's motherboard that is the first thing to load when a computer is turned on.

This has a number of valuable advantages: an infected PC appears to be functioning normally, so the infection remains invisible to virus protection and other security programs. And even if the hard drive of an infected computer has been completely erased and a new operating system is installed, the ANT malware can continue to function and ensures that new spyware can once again be loaded onto what is presumed to be a clean computer. The ANT developers call this "Persistence" and believe this approach has provided them with the possibility of permanent access."

This is something that I would like to bring to everybody participation.
It takes significant energy to put meeting like this together.
Lets bring in a proper structure, so everybody can benefit with maximum.
Some of the key issues I am finding:
    1. How to get the best mining equipment asap for the best price. What is out there reliable, since we all know that there are many scams. This will help us to prevent them.
Might be helpful to put together an board with info, when somebody has equipment for sale due to upgrade or other reason.
    2. The best way to get bitcoins directly.
    3. What pools are most prosperous and why.
    4. The impact of different mining software on performance in mining.
Like for ex.: open CL drivers. etc.
    5. Security of wallet and storage.
Please join me and provide your input so everybody can benefit and consider time well spent.

Here is a good list of ASIC rigs:

      https://en.bitcoin.it/...

Some connect to host computers via USB and are only as secure as those computers. Others connect to your network as stand-alone devices. These type most likely run custom versions of Linux so are as secure as any other Linux system on your network.

Antonopoulos, Thank you for everything that you've shared over the web re:Bitcoin and for everything you are doing to accelerate progress.

I wanted to ask you if you could explain at the meeting the currently safest, easiest way to buy and secure Bitcoin?

I first got in at $13 and sold at $60, but now, after learning a bit more, may like to get back in at current levels if I can learn how to safely keep the private keys away from software/hardware/ACPI driver keyloggers, side-channel attacks, etc...

I suppose I still "don't know what I don't know" about securing Bitcoin from the get-go and really would appreciate if you could share your advice with everyone at the meeting...maybe you could do a quick buying/securing demo if other more recent adopters are also interested?! If your Safe Paper Wallets are an adequate solution for newer adopters, could you bring some SPW starter kits to the meeting for purchase?

Thank you and I look forward to your presentation!

These specific event threads always seem to get more action than the general group discussion area. These good topics will begin to get lost after the event, while the discussion area is more enduring. The Wall Street Journal ran a "paywalled" article

    http://online.wsj.com/news/articles/SB10001424052702304753504579284593005519808

describing a wallet called "Dark Wallet", explaining that this wallet encrypts the transaction chain. Overall, the article covered BC in a positive light, and positive publicity is only good. IDK if this is bleeding edge or old news, but I hope to find out as a member of this meetup group.

    January 1, 2014

    • Jim M.

I am not able to read the WSJ article but 'encrypting the transaction chain' doesn't sound quite right. I think Dark Wallet encrypts the communication between the wallet client and block chain servers so prevent snoops from seeing your transaction messages, but I may be wrong. I haven't read much about Dark Wallet yet. Their website is here: https://darkwallet.uns...
