Don’t miss our first typographic show n’ tell event, powered by PechaKucha. Presenters will speak on the topics of Los Angeles-influenced type design, lettering, environmental design, reading cognition, found type, writing systems and more.

PechaKucha (http://www.pechakucha.org/), or ‘chit chat’ in Japanese, was developed by Klein Dytham Architecture, in Tokyo back in 2003. PechaKucha nights now run all over the world. It’s a simple quick-fire format – presenters show 20 images, each for 20 seconds. The night is a great way for you to meet and hear about interesting design activity happening locally.

Join us and our friends at General Assembly (https://generalassemb.ly/los-angeles) for a fast-paced night of type inspiration and interaction between the disciplines between budding designers and established typographers alike. A big thank you to our friends at General Assembly in Santa Monica for hosting and sponsoring refreshments for our year-end event!

What will you learn about in 400 seconds?

I Love You Los Angeles: I love the way you spread your beautiful limbs from neighborhood to neighborhood. I love your lettering and it’s intricate layers and coded meanings. I especially love your gang graffiti.Anthony Acock, Assistant Professor, Cal Poly Pomona

The Government Controls Your Type: How does one build elegant public environments when ADA and MUTCD guidelines and standards dictate font choice, size, and layout?Patrick Fredrickson, Design Director, Selbert Perkins Design

Dimensional Lettering: A series of examples of different ways in which lettering can be treated in a non-traditional and experimental way.Ana Gomez, Lettering Artist

Experiential Typography: Presenting an array of typography in the built environment, from static to dynamic and large scale type.Kris Helmick, Designer, Hunt Design

Typeface and Body Copy: Mixed-media pieces incorporate type as an element very different from my graphic design work. Some of my images are kind of a tongue-in-cheek exploration of typography.Barbara Kosoff, Illustrator, Design, Visual Artist

Typography as an Aid to Cognition: Research on visual perception, visual memory is helpful in understanding the role typography plays in aiding cognition. Many people believe that typography is simply an added benefit to text and that its implementation is secondary to the content. Carina Marano, Graphic Designer

Int. Courier - Present Day: Most of LA has looked at their fair share of Courier, the standard typeface for all screenplays, for better or worse. Is there still modern typographical value in this monospaced workhorse? What new things can we do with it? Paul Mendoza, Graphic Designer, Looking

Neon Los Angeles: Between sculpture and lighting, between vernacular and institutional, neon signs are a facet of Los Angeles unique to its cultural context. This difficult medium also requires dexterity and planning in terms of sculpting its form and executing its documentation.Ana Monroe, Graduate Student, Art Center College of Design

My LA Type Life: A never-ending and colorful journey influenced the way PJ went about typography and design that evolves as much with him as it does with the city we live in.PJ Richardson, Laundry

Foreign Fling Fonts: Letterforms of different writing systems can migrate among each other, spawning fascinating hybrids. Showing exceptional examples from the unique ethnic salad of Los Angeles as well as other locations world-wide, he will open eyes to the pleasures and pitfalls of intermixing typographic cultures.Hrant Papazian, Type Designer, The MicroFoundry
