A Conversation with Eric Ries

Eric not only created the term "Lean Startup", he has sparked a movement that is changing the way people think about startups.

In a very special Lean LA event, serial entrepreneur Jason Calacanis from Mahalo and This Week in Startups will interview Eric Ries live on stage at the Santa Monica Civic Auditorium.

Everyone who attends will receive a free autographed copy of Eric's new book "The Lean Startup".

Most startups fail. But many of those failures are preventable.

The Lean Startup is a new approach being adopted across the globe, changing the way companies are built and new products are launched. Eric Ries defines a startup as an organization dedicated to creating something new under conditions of extreme uncertainty. This is just as true for one person in a garage or a group of seasoned professionals in a Fortune 500 boardroom. What they have in common is a mission to penetrate that fog of uncertainty to discover a successful path to a sustainable business.

The Lean Startup approach fosters companies that are both more capital efficient and that leverage human creativity more effectively. Inspired by lessons from lean manufacturing, it relies on “validated learning,” rapid scientific experimentation, as well as a number of counter-intuitive practices that shorten product development cycles, measure actual progress without resorting to vanity metrics, and learn what customers really want. It enables a company to shift directions with agility, altering plans inch by inch, minute by minute.

Rather than wasting time creating elaborate business plans, The Lean Startup offers entrepreneurs - in companies of all sizes - a way to test their vision continuously, to adapt and adjust before it’s too late. Ries provides a scientific approach to creating and managing successful startups in a age when companies need to innovate more than ever.

Are they serving food at this thing? I thought I read that earlier but I don't see it now.

@Will Leingang: maybe they were just doing some iterative testing & customer discovery to see if we'd sign up?

    $30 for a meetup isn't lean. :)

Drinks and a shaved ice truck but no food.

$30 may not seem lean but all the funds went to the book and venue costs!

Hey everyone - my first LeanLA meetup! Was insightful and unexpectedly entertaining thanks to the Church of Calacanis.

I didn't really get to talk to anyone, but I'm looking forward to future meetups, getting to know all of you and being involved in this great community!

Enjoyed the event, if anyone has pointers to folks that are trying this kind of thing with enterprise customers, I'd like to learn how to map these concepts to situations where you are trying to integrate into an organization's strategy (required for the sale) rather than an individual users behavior.

    Mark,
I second Patrick's comment about reading the 4 steps. My company applies these concepts successfully to enterprise products. I would be happy to talk to you about it at the next meetup. I am the really tall guy, so not hard to find. I actually think it is much more straightforward to apply lean startup methodology to enterprise products than it is to consumer/network effect businesses.

Out of this group who is looking to collaborate or share or create things using this methodology?

I am looking for the other side of the puzzle which happens to be a developer for me. Anyone else looking to roll out a business?

See you at the next meet!

My first LeanLA meetup. Very happy. Devouring Eric's book today. Not sure what the LeanLA protocol is for post-meetup discussions, but I guess this wouldn't really be the thread?
I have web/IOS startup due to launch in January. I want it to be the most effective application of these principles I can achieve. If anyone wants to start a discussion and learn with me how to best apply these ideas in the real world, I'd be thrilled to have company. tmgilchrist@mac.com Thanks all for the evening.

What a great event! It was my first and I am hooked. Several our our companies are lean startups and my interest in lean is more on the talent acquisition side of things. Does anyone have some ideas as to how this methodology could be applied to the recruiting process?

Look forward to the next one!

That's easy Andres!! Just make sure you're pre-funded and can't offer your team a salary!! Equity-only compensation will keep your selection of candidates extra lean...and awesome !!

Eric was terrific...conversational format was excellent (vs. straight q&a), content was great. One need to improve area...when you call for a 7:30 event, try to start on time. Sitting around for 45 minutes for a busy CEO is not fun or productive. I almost left.
