STUDENTS: RailsBridge Workshop for Women @ LARubyConf

**IMPORTANT**Please read to the bottom of this message**

This Los Angeles Women’s Ruby on Rails Group workshop is intended to reach out to women in the Los Angeles area who are interested in learning Ruby on Rails. Men are welcome to attend if you bring a woman who wants to learn Ruby on Rails too.

In this workshop, we'll take you through building a complete web application using Ruby on Rails. By the end of the workshop, you'll have an application on the internet that connects to a database and reads and writes information.

We'll meet on a thursday evening for introductions and to install all of the software you’ll need. We will then spend Friday working through the curriculum. Total programming novices, system administrators and developers in other languages are all welcome. Each class will be separated by experience level.

In order to participate in this workshop, each participant needs to bring her/his own laptop and power supply. Please also note that we will be sending out emails on a regular basis with updates, notifications and to-do’s prior to the event. So please make sure the email address you have listed on Meetup.com is one that you check frequently. You will lose your spot if you fail to respond in a timely manner.

If you have a Mac, you must install Xcode on your laptop before coming to the first part of the workshop on Friday. (Xcode is the software that creates a coding environment for you to build your app.) Xcode is a very large file that takes 2-3 hours to download, and only one the first step in a more involved setup process. **If you need help, please contact Jen or Anna. When you have it completed, please add the words "XCode Complete" to your RSVP. Please do this step, if you do not, you will be unable to participate in the workshop. If you do not have a mac, you do not need to do this--please simply add your OS to your meetup RSVP.

Here’s the tentative timeline for the event:

Thursday
*6 - 9 pm: Installfest (you are not required to be here for this entire time period, just until you are able to have your setup confirmed by an instructor. It is also ok if you need to show up after the starting time, just be aware the install process can be time consuming depending on how lucky you are :))

Friday
* 9:00-10:00 Sign-in/get coffee/network

* 10:00-10:15 Intro Presentation

* 10:15-12:00p Session 1

* 12:00-1:00 Lunch

* 1:00-4:00 Session 2

* 4:00-4:30 Teacher/TA debrief & cleanup

      It is a good ruby intro.

    I am so incredibly lucky I attended this workshop, because I was going to learn Ruby anyways, and trying to install it on my impossible computer would have killed me. Thank you to everyone (and there were many) who worked on trying to fix it/let me borrow their laptops while others were trying to fix it.

    What a great workshop! This was my first tech meetup, so I didn't know what to expect. Thursday evening's Installfest was very well-organized. Anna provided detailed written instructions and there were many volunteers there to help. Thank you to Denise and Jacob for your help with my install.
    Friday's workshop was incredible. It was great to get to know each other and begin the day learning Ruby as a group. Being paired up with a volunteer for the coding tutorial was a great way to let everyone code at their own level. Thank you to Soyoung for taking the time to show me so many extra tips.

    Excellent - Thanks to Anna, Jen and Tiffany plus the other volunteers

    This was a great workshop in that I had a good intro to Ruby and Rails and was introduced to a diverse group of programmers. I wish I had a little more background with Ruby before attending as I would have been able to grasp more of the concepts my tutor was explaining so I hope to read up and then come back to ask more questions.

    I had such a fantastic time today with all you intelligent, delightful, multitalented people! Please keep in touch and let's do coding again! Check out this documentary by Stanford women computer science students, working to encourage women to enter it! It's called "She++" (http://sheplusplus.stanford.edu): Trailer: https://www.youtube.com/watch?feature=player_embedded&v=2vPPmhQNS6I

    We should all watch and discuss it!

It was such a pleasure talking to some of you (obviously I didnt speak with everyone!). I would love to stay in contact with you all if possible. I plan to seriously make ruby workshops a thing to attend. Have a great weekend :)

    Thank you everyone for coming, it was a fabulous payoff to see so many women in the room coding, learning how to code and having a blast. Everyone will be pinged for the next Railsbridge. FYI: Every Wednesday night at Carbon5 from 6pm to 9pm is a hackathon.
    I often go to Cal-Tech that night, but would be happy to do a 1 on 1 to go over material with anyone in this group.

    Thank you to our Sponsors; ALTOROS for lending us an international rubist: Juan Pablo, and SunToucher's David Simmons for all that great food. Our Volunteers get a hug, Jen Diamond for putting up with my need to organize everything, and for those fabulous T-Shirts.

    Please keep in touch!
    I'll be sending everyone a list of events worth noting in an email to everyone, shortly.

    See you soon, Ladies!

    Traffic may make it difficult to make it to the Installfest on Thursday night. I need to be on the Westside until 7:30. Should I try to make it or can I attend on Friday? I have XCode installed and I am familiar with using it.

    February 21, 2013

    • jendiamond

      If you can get through most of the install on your own you might want to still come. How far on the west side will you be? Or if you can make it over by 8:15 it could still possibly work out. You could call us. Or wait until next time.

    Hello!

    I definitely want to come on Friday, but I am at work until 6:30 today, and am in downtown. I already have my environment set up from a previous RailsBridge. Is it ok if I just see you lovely ladies tomorrow?

      No problem.. We are planning an event at Carbon 5 with more progressive curriculum. Sorry you won't be there... it would have been nice to meet you.

    I think this is a mistake.
    It says Friday and Saturday, instead of Thursday and Friday.

    "We'll meet on a Friday evening for introductions and to install all of the software you’ll need. We will then spend Saturday working through the curriculum. Total programming novices, system administrators and developers in other languages are all welcome. Each class will be separated by experience level"

    1 · February 11, 2013

    • Tiffany D.

      Yes, that was my mistake. I fixed it above. That's what I get for copying and pasting. The correct days are Thursday for the Installfest and Friday for the workshop. I apologize for the mix-up.
