Eastside Ruby Study Group

Let's Learn Ruby & Ruby on Rails

One Week at a Time

For your convenience there are two groups meeting simultaneously one on the West side of L.A. in Santa Monica and on the East side in Glendale (this location may change.)

We meetup with our laptops and are working through Zed Shaw's Learn Ruby the Hard Way. We'll discuss it and go over the examples together. We'll help each other figure out the harder parts and really understand it. You should be able to do some work on your own too so we can all stay on the same page/book on both sides of town.

We meet every Thursday night 6-9pm.

Don't feel intimidated if you are brandy new to Ruby or Ruby on Rails; we will help you get up to speed if you are willing to put in the time. If you are more advanced; you can learn by helping others learn while having a dedicated study night. Maybe you even have a demonstration you are willing to share with the group.

Once a month both sides of town will meet up and have a demonstration of something new. We intend on learning a lot. Spread the word. You don't have to be a woman to attend but we do want to have a good learning environment where no one is nervous to ask the most basic question.

Me, Ashley, Stephanie, Ceren, Shannon, and Neha met up at Panera. Ashley worked on her own stuff. I helped Shannon and Ceren get started on the Zed book. We broke down and read out loud exactly what is happening in the examples. Neha read ex16 outloud which was illuminating. Next week we will do the same with more examples.

Our goal is to get to examples 22 & 23 by next week and each pick an example to read out loud next week as part of example 22. Right now we are at staggered sections of the book but hoping to connect over the next few weeks. (Skip ahead and read ex 22 & 23 before you even finish the others.)

I pick example 20 to read out loud. Post your pick. Don't worry about which chapter just pick one you feel comfortable reading out loud because you understand it. (Maybe we only read excerpts of the longer ones.)
