Eastside Ruby Study Group

Now that you've done Rails Girls...

Let's Learn Ruby & Ruby on Rails

One Week at a Time

For your convenience there are two groups meeting simultaneously one on the West side of L.A. in Santa Monica and on the East side in Glendale (this location may change.)

We meetup with our laptops and are working through Zed Shaw's Learn Ruby the Hard Way. We'll discuss it and go over the examples together. We'll help each other figure out the harder parts and really understand it. You should be able to do some work on your own too so we can all stay on the same page/book on both sides of town. Our emphasis is on really getting down the basics and being able to discuss it with each other instead of rushing forward.

We meet every Thursday night 6-9pm.

Don't feel intimidated if you are brandy new to Ruby or Ruby on Rails; we will help you get up to speed if you are willing to put in the time. If you are more advanced; you can learn by helping others learn while having a dedicated study night. Maybe you even have a demonstration you are willing to share with the group.

Once a month both sides of town will meet up and have a demonstration of something new. We intend on learning a lot. Spread the word. You don't have to be a woman to attend but we do want to have a good learning environment where no one is nervous to ask the most basic question.

What chapter/exercise is everyone, (on average) up to in the Zed book?

Me, Joanna and Brittany worked on the Zed book. Talked about STDIN, ARGV and redefining variables. Ashley worked on a coding challenge for a job interview. We all made progress. We all wish we could have stayed later because we were on a roll.

Things didn't work out for me today. I have the book from Learn Python the Hard Way. I will be trying the lessons and hope to make it out there next time! Be well.

I want to go over some of the concepts in the app I made this weekend (at the rails workshop). I have a poor understanding of "class" "div"...etc. See you Thursday. :)

Do as many as you can. 20 is a lot by then but be sure to buy the pdf (It's only $3.) The html is free but the internet is slow so it's just easier. We can definitely talk about the concepts you are wondering about too.
