What's So Great About... RUBY ON RAILS

This topic is part of our ongoing, "What's so great about" series. The presentation requires no Ruby knowledge, but it is primarily targeted to developers with coding skills. However, we do welcome startup founders and business people who want to find out more about the language and development platform. By the way, recruiters and business people are always given a chance to introduce themselves at the start of our meetings.

Scott Gonyea from TrueCar.com will be presenting, and TrueCar will be providing food & bevs - thanks! RSVP ASAP to be counted in the food order!

"Introduction to Ruby and the Rails MVC Framework" - Scott will be covering some of the features that make Ruby such an interesting language. These language features are the "magic" behind Rails, and are what makes it so different (and powerful). Then we will cover the basics of creating a Rails project, adding plugins (such as authentication), as well as see how easy it is to write tests for it all.

Scott Gonyea is a Ruby on Rails software developer at TrueCar, Inc. Scott's background lies most heavily in Perl, C, Ruby, and JavaScript with the occasional Java. He has worked on Mainframe systems, in the Enterprise, and at Startups. Scott has built web crawlers in the cloud, data warehouses, crafted user interfaces, and loves being a generalist.

Richard Grossman, LADUG Pres, says, "Ruby (including the ROR, Ruby on Rails, framework) has become one of the leading web-development platforms. I'm very excited to have Scott presenting Ruby so we can see what the code looks like, understand the basic object model, and get tips on resources."

FOOD & BEV SPONSORED BY TRUECAR.COM - RSVP REQUIRED FOR FOOD SERVICE SO THAT WE CAN GET AN ACCURATE COUNT FOR THE FOOD ORDER !

When you get off the elevator you'll be in the food court. Walk to your left past McDonalds and over to the first exit from the food court to your LEFT. Just off the food court but before you get to the stairs and doors, there will be a corridor to your right. Walk down and Community Room A is on your left. Rest rooms are just down the corridor past the community room.
