New Meetup: Downtown L.A. Art Walk (with 35 cent cocktails!)

Announcing a new Meetup for The Social Detective Agency: Discovering LA's SubCultures!

What: Downtown L.A. Art Walk (with 35 cent cocktails!)

When: Thursday, February 11,[masked]:00 PM

The Edison
108 W 2nd St
Los Angeles, CA 90012

It's a dirty job, but some Meetup group has to go to Art Walk. The people demand it! So, this month we're going back again! Don't know what Art Walk is? Let's see... where do I start?

"The Downtown Los Angeles Art Walk is a free event held every second Thursday in and around the Historic Core's Gallery Row neighborhood. For this one night each month, Downtown LA returns to its historic pedestrian-based culture, a vibrant scene that is itself a draw for locals and tourists seeking an authentic urban experience. Launched in 2004 by the then-gritty neighborhood's pioneer gallerists, Art Walk has become a grassroots urban success story, with upwards of 10,000 people coming out each month to see the newest art exhibits, enjoy the bustling street culture, eat, drink and socialize."

We meet at the Edison first (pictured) for a 35 cent cocktail. Don't know what the Edison is either? You must be new in town.

"Downtown's lounge-life evolution continues in a historically refurbished, turn-of-the-century boiler room. The Edison is a world class lounge that retains architectural and mechanical artifacts; an homage to its history as the first private power plant in Downtown Los Angeles."

Meet at the Edison at 6:00PM. 35 cent cocktails are served until 7:00PM. (One per customer.)

Know Before You Go:
A strict dress code at the Edison prohibits athletic wear and sneakers (regardless of the brand or cost). Collared shirts are preferred for men; women should dress accordingly. (The dress code might not be enforced before 7:00PM, but why take chances?)

Look Good:
The bar is actually located down Harlem Place Alley. Look for the bouncer outside.

Upon entering the Edison (and before you go down the stairs leading to the bar), a young lady will present you with a ticket, card, or Indian-head nickel (whichever token they happen to be using that night) and tell you what the 35 cent cocktail for the evening is. (Unfortunately, you don't have a choice. But, don't worry, they're always very good.) You then present that token, along with 35 cents, to the bartender, and he will provide you with that cocktail.
If you do not wish to have the 35 cent cocktail, please present your token to Joe P. He will be happy to take it off your hands. Please be advised that, should you want something else to drink, and even though it will be Happy Hour, the prices here are a bit high. (Aside from the 35 cent drinks, the Happy Hour consists of 40% off "classic drinks," whatever they are. I'm guessing that would cost you about 7 dollars for a mixed drink.)

We leave the Edison promptly at 7:00PM.

I recommend taking the Red Line downtown. The Edison is just 3 1/2 short blocks from the Civic Center Station.
