When a person dies, there is a 72 hour "window" before the "light" for them, to crossover, disappears. If they choose NOT to go into the light they are unable to crossover and complete their journeys - to face final judgment, and evolve to higher dimensions. Those souls who don't go into the light, and choose to stay here on this earthy dimension, for any reason, are called "earthbound ghosts or spirits." We are all here on earth as students, as learners, and as teachers to help others. We will not evolve until we finish our purpose, tasks, and duties here on earth. To serve others.

We all have a purpose and it's up to all of us to find it. If someone chooses NOT to go into the light, that is their choice. Some earthbound spirits are afraid to "face final judgment," held against their will, or have a guilt, or just can't let go; so they attach themselves to objects, friends, or family. This is a common practice of earthbound spirits and they must be convinced to go into the light - because there is nothing more for them here on earth, if they stay. Most have to be coaxed to complete their journeys by, first, going into the light. Going into the light is what they must ultimately do. They can be very stubborn. Especially, small children who are "confused" and don't understand that they must go into the light. But, in places of severe violence or tragedy, there are many "negative" spirits (murderers, etc.) the oppressor, who hold their earthbound victims as prisoners and they are NOT allowed to go into the light - Those are the earthbound spirits who are held against their will.

Ghosts have the ability to revisit this earthy, lower dimension and come and go as they please. Many people call this "residual energy signatures." Because they are on a different plane and dimension than us, their residual energy signatures are often mistaken for souls who have already crossed over. This is actually a result of ghosts who have NOT crossed over - most "residual spirits" are oblivious to the fact that they are actually dead. They continue on with their "everyday lives" as if nothing has happened to them. These are also the spirits who are confused, stubborn, attached, or just refuse to go into the light.
