I'd like to give a warm welcome to all of those who have joined the group. I think Meetup is a pretty awesome tool to utilize to keep people updated on events at their convenience; friendly reminders in your inbox take the stress off trying to keep track of a group you have an interest in.
It has come to my attention that a misunderstanding has arose from some of the events listed vs what a meetup usually means. So, I'm sending out this Email to clarify.
A Meetup Group hosts Meetups, which are face to face meetings that happen in real life between members and Organizers
Tabling aka "leafletting" One or more activists distributing informational pamphlets; which does involve face to face interaction, but is not an extended gathering of the minds around a specific table/meal/coffee/activity.
"Throughout history, activists fighting for or against particular causes have written out their grievances, printed them, and distributed them to the masses. As so much of animal oppression is both physically hidden from view and considered socially acceptable, the dissemination of anti-oppression literature can be vitally important to bringing about global change: people first need to realize it is happening before they can be motivated to speak up or act out against it." ~Excerpt from loveallbeings.org
I'm still figuring out how meetup works as an "organizer" rather than just as a user. I list events that the Veg Club are going to be at (events that aren't held by them) as well as events they host themselves. It's the former that led to the most recent misunderstanding. As I was told, a gentleman arrived at the recent Earth Save Hootenanny expecting, well, an actual meetup rather than what was occurring; "tabling" at a large Earth related event. He was disappointed. I will attempt to be more clear in the future about what the event entails, and will try to include such terms as "tabling" in the future descriptions.
It had been discussed that perhaps such events as the Earthsave, where the Vegetarian club is leaf letting but not having a true Meetup, should be put up in the discussion forum. I'm concerned about that route, as the discussion forum is hardly utilized and I feel that events, although not specifically Veg club related, may be missed by those who would want to know about such things. Input is welcome.
That's what I wanted to let everyone know. Thanks for your patience.
As my profile states, I'm not part of the Vegetarian Club Committee, the passionate group of people who began this club 2 years ago within the Louisville area. I'm a newcomer to Louisville, having moved from the midwest in July 2011. When I arrived, I looked on meetup to see if there were a vegan or vegetarian group nearby; I was disappointed when I didn't find one. Then 5 months after I'd lived here, I stumbled across a well established group on Facebook; the Vegetarian Club. I was pleasantly surprised.
Personally, it was a lot of trouble for me to keep track of them on their facebook or their website so... I donated to the Club (and the cause!) in my own way by paying for 6 months of Meetup website access. I felt that the Vegetarian club's info outlets (FB and website) were not easy to keep track of and were missing a niche of people (or at least people like me) who checked meetup for groups of that nature. It is my hope that Meetup can help bring more people together to these events.
