Are you interested in art but unsure what to look for in paintings? Do gallery visits leave you more tired and confused than excited and enlightened? Are you one of those people who say " I don't know much about art but I know what i like'? Perhaps you'd prefer to say "I know what I like and I know why I like it" ? Our group is intended for people like you in the neighbourhood who would appreciate time out in the week to gather locally at a convenient and interesting location, hear an art talk over a glass of wine, discuss and socialise. The emphasis will be on informality and learning through having fun. About me: I am an artist and Art History lecturer ( MA from Courtauld Institute of Art, London) and guide at the National Gallery. I have a lot of experience in teaching art history to very diverse adult audiences, from art appreciation societies to cruises. I love teaching and demystifying art and helping people to develop confidence in understanding art. I am currently writing a guide to " great themes in art". I am also a landscape painter and my familiarity with painting techniques informs my teaching of art history. About the venue: the Chocolate Factory N16 is a delightful enclave around a cobbled courtyard of 27 potters', artists' and designers' studios. It is not normally open to the public except during open studio weekends twice a year so you'll get a privileged access to this secret hive of creative activity. Starting in October, we will meet weekly on Wednesday evenings in my spacious studio at the Chocolate Factory N16 to look at various aspects of Art History, beginning with a series introducing the great periods in art in an easy and accessible overview. You will soon learn how to distinguish a renaissance painting from a Baroque or Rococo one, or a Dutch painting from an English one. We will move on to look at ways art conveys its meaning through symbols, composition, light or movement. Then we'll look at the way great themes in art develop through the ages. ( eg portraits, landscape painting, the nude etc ) Although I would love to build up a nice group of regulars, don't feel you need to commit to each week, just come if you have time and energy. The price £10 includes a glass of wine, soft drink or a coffee. See you soon for some stimulating and relaxing, informative and entertaining evenings in N16!
