The Maritime Archaeological and Historical Society (MAHS) is organized for the purpose of enhancing public awareness and fostering appreciation for the significance of historic shipwrecks and other submerged cultural resources. Our mission is to preserve our maritime heritage, and members volunteer to participate in underwater archaeology expeditions around the world.
MAHS brings together a group of people who have interests in SCUBA Diving, History, Archaeology, and Maritime culture.
For SCUBA Divers MAHS can help provide a better appreciation and understanding of shipwrecks, not just as another dive site but as a relic of another period in time with a story of how it got there, how it has changed since being a wreck, and possibly its importance in history.
For non-divers, MAHS provides another aspect into the History and Archaeological disciplines in addition to land based work. Many early societies developed in and around coastal areas and relied heavily upon the marine environment for trade, transportation, food, and early industry. The classes and projects that MAHS conducts can help give a better understanding of the archaeological techniques applied to a different environment as well as a chance to apply those skills to learning and preserving local history.
