Hiking at Highland Recreational Area (7-8 miles ~ 3 hours)

  • Dec 29, 2013 · 12:00 PM

What is the plan?
A completely wasteful expenditure of energy over about eight miles done at a moderate pace with complete stranger who will become your new friends along the way (hmmm, this is beginning to sound like a cult...).  Afterwards, we will attempt to replenish the energy we lost at one of those places that can magically turn your money into food and drink.  Alas, they cannot do the reverse.

Where do we meet?
At the parking lot/picnic area on the south east side of Haven Hill Lake (meeting place is circled on the Highland Rec Map- the road is Haven Rd).  It is the first right turn after you pass the ranger station- you cannot see it on google maps unless you turn on the satellite view.

This is a state park so you need the Recreation Pass on your license plate.  If you do not have a Pass, the worse that happen is a ranger will put a ticket on your car and you will have to pay the $11 for the pass.

Answers to Common Questions:
Dogs are allowed, so are cats, but llamas are preferred.
Bring snacks and water.
There is a outhouse at the trailhead and about halfway through the hike.
Yes, we will stop and allow you to go.
The stories about the hike leader getting lost are all true.
But he claims he does it on purpose.

It is exactly 1.1 mile east of the park on M-59/Highland Road.  It is on the left (north) side right when the island separating east and west bound traffic goes away.

address: 6707 Highland Road, White Lake, MI

It was fun. I didn't think I had it in me since I hadn't been hiking for quite a while now. Needless to say, I am quite proud of myself.

Couldn't find the park entrance until 1215 since navigation was wrong regarding location of destination. I'm wandering around semi lost on the trail with my dog.

Parking area closed... Go to circle drive. It is the 2nd parking area past the ranger station. If you hit the staging area you have gone too far.

Sorry - something came up at the last minute. Have a great hike everyone! Wish I could be there.

I saw this was one of the few hikes that are dog-friendly, is anyone else bringing their dog? Wanted to make sure others are doing it too before I came with mine - sorry Charlie, I don't have a llama... Yet!

I would love to join you but my fitness level would only take me 3-4 miles. Is there a way I could hike part way and then meet you at Billy's?

It is a little bit tricky because we are doing a large loop. There are some shortcuts back or, of course, you can backtrack. If you choose to do either of these, then bring a map of the park and on the hike I can show you the ways back.

Hiking on Sundays during Football season is for dipsy-doodles.

Hmmm, that has a nice ring to it. I just might make it the title of my next hike. "Dipsy-doodle hiking at..."

As long as I'm not out too terribly late at a party the night before and don't have a hangover, I'm in and I'm excited!
