Meditation Hike @ Historic Yates Mill County Park

This park is south of the I-440 beltline that goes around Raleigh.  Take the Lake Wheeler exit off of the beltline (exit #297), go south on Lake Wheeler Road for ~ 2.8 miles.  The entrance is on the right side - be looking for it cause just after you see the sign you'll be turning into the park.

This is a wonderful park that was brought to my attention just recently (thank you Liz!); and, I hiked it today for the first time - delightful weather, trails and park features.  The remnants of the old mill and the nearby rocks provide a delightful interlude at the beginning of the walk; and, we'll finish off the walk there as well (journaling on the rocks, or overlook near the mill).

We'll be walking on three interconnected trails in this park - starting off on the Millpond Trail that skirts around the lake, connecting up with the Creekside Trail that is an out-and-back trail (with a loop at the end) that shift into marsh grasses and farm land vistas, switching onto the High Ridge Trail that overlooks the marsh on one side and the lake and the other, then finishing up back on the Millpond Trail to reach the parking lot.  Overall the walk will be about 4 - 4.5 miles, on natural surface trails that are fairly even and with minimal tree roots.  Plan on ~ 2 hours for the hike and journaling.

We'll be walking in silence for the entire walk, journaling (or sitting in silence) when we return to the mill site, then talking/walking as a group to return to the parking area.  Near the parking lot there's a boardwalk and a park center with great places to sit and look out over the lake ... for those who want to talk and/or immerse themselves even more in nature.

Sorry that I wasn't able to get there on time, but thank you Leslie, for giving me an idea over the phone of how to catch up to you folks once I got there. My guest and I tried, but we weren't able to locate you. Regardless, it was THE most beautiful place I've been to in a long time, and the weather was gorgeous. Thanks for introducing me to a new hiking location!

This hike was great like always. I felt like Alice in Wonderland. So many striking environments together in one park :)

Although I was looking forward to walking in the fog (sort of a mystic experience) the sun broke through at the start of our walk giving us a sunny and warm day. I used my surroundings as metaphor during the walk - on the Creekside Trail, with its many steps to go around muddy segments, I was able to remind myself that I merely need to think about "the next best step." The patches of bamboo and the flow of the water over the stone wall/dam stick in my mind.

Is attendance to walks limited, or is that just the "feature" of Meetup, com, putting more than 15 ppl into a waitlist?

Hi Janna - yes, the walks are limited to 15 people. I have the waiting list set up to automatically shift people up into these 15 slots if/when someone who is scheduled to attend changes his/her status to not attending. If you put your name on the waiting list, you will find that there is a large shift up on the Saturday nite and Sunday morning before an event ... to date, all of the wait listed folks have shifted up to attending, but of late there have been more people waiting. So yes, it's an official waiting list, not a feature (I have set it to 15 people/walk as it seems to be a good size for these types of events. Hope that helps.
