September Main Line Writers Group - WHY WE WRITE

Join us for the SEPTEMBER Main Line Writers Group meeting - Wednesday, September 18 - WHY WE WRITE. Author Merry Jones offers thoughts and observations relevant to every writer on their writing compulsions:
--Is it a matter of choice?
--Are we driven by the psychological, physical or practical?
--What happens to us if we don't write?
--How are we to manage this condition?

Merry’s own work deals with inter-personal relationships, particularly their unanticipated aspects. For several years, she approached this topic through light humor (including the best-selling I LOVE HIM, BUT…) and serious non-fiction (including BIRTHMOTHERS: WOMEN WHO HAVE RELINQUISHED BABIES FOR ADOPTION TELL THEIR STORIES).

SUMMER SESSION and BEHIND THE WALLS are thrilling suspense novels featuring heroine Harper Jennings, an Iraq war veteran living in Ithaca, New York. Merry's popular Philadelphia-based Zoe Hayes mysteries include THE NANNY MURDERS (2005), THE RIVER KILLINGS (2006), THE DEADLY NEIGHBORS (2007) and BORROWED AND BLUE MURDERS (2008). She has also published pieces in GLAMOUR, THE LADIES’ HOME JOURNAL, AMERICAN WOMAN and many other magazines.

A member of The Philadelphia Liars Club, The Authors’ Guild, Sisters in Crime and Mystery Writers of America, Merry lives with her husband in the Philadelphia suburbs, teaching writing part-time at Temple University. Born and raised in the Midwest (Skokie, IL), she is an alumna of Niles Township High School North, Cornell University (BA) and The University of Pennsylvania’s Annenberg School for Communications (MA).

Our meeting place is Michael's Restaurant Deli in King of Prussia, just north of The King of Prussia Mall on Rt 202. The address is 130 Town Center Road in King of Prussia,[masked]-3265. The meeting officially starts at 7:00 pm but many of us come early (around 6:00 pm) to eat and socialize a bit - but you can order your meal at any time during the meeting. We use a private room and the acoustics are great. You'll have no problem hearing our speakers or each other.

Just a reminder that you can order a scrumptious meal at Michael's off their extensive menu. We don't get charged for the great room, but Michaels does have the expectation that attendees will order a meal. It is a fair expectation and the meals are very reasonably priced.

Mark your calendar for every third Wednesday of the month. Feel free to tell others and bring a friend or two.

As usual, any questions, please contact me, Gary Zenker, at[masked] or [masked]. We are all looking forward to seeing you there.

Merry Jones gave us great insight into the world of writers and publishers, both in the "good old days" and today's market. As always there was lots of interaction between the audience and the speaker and it was a very interesting meeting.

Sadly, I need to skip this meeting and so I wanted to attend. I have a very sick dog here that requires close care:(( If she passes tonight...I'll be there but I'm hoping with all my heart that she won't. I'll miss you guys!

Merry Jones gave a thoughtful and realistic picture of the publishing industry today. She also provided an interesting and compelling theory about the need writers have to write. Overall a fascinating and very informtive presentation.

We are so lucky to regularly get speakers like Merry Jones who are working writers with a track record and can offer us insights on all levels of the craft and the business. Loved the questions from the group at this meeting, too. What an incredible resource!

Our guest speaker, thriller writer Merry Jones, wasn't feeling well, but she still did a decent job.

One of our best meetings ever. Merry was interesting, insightful and entertaining. She offered great discussion regarding the needs a writer has and the publishing industry in general, of which she has great experience. The group asked great questions. We are lucky to attract the caliber of presenters we do!

I am looking forward to my first meeting with like minded writers. We do share a common bond. Like many writers I fear my efforts will pale in comparison with other writers.
