Needle Peak - Coquihalla Hwy - Difficult w/ Scrambling + Exposure - 13km - 7-8hr

  • May 26, 2013 · 7:00 AM
  • This location is shown only to members

The Coquihalla Summit area's most popular hike, with a ridgewalk, scramble, and small lake all in one.

NOTE: This hike has a minimum weather threshold of partly cloudy w/ zero precipitation. If the weather is not cooperating I will come up with a Plan B hike somewhere along this driving route.

WHAT TO EXPECT...
I would have classified this hike as intermediate if it had not been for the scrambling sections required to peak.

The first 45 min to an hour is a set of steep switchbacks which brings you the top of the ridge with converts to an easy mountain meadow walk with fabulous vistas. We then continue along the ridge until the last hour where the trail changes to scrambling over rocks w/ some steeper climbs, but the sense of accomplishment and incredible views from the summit will be well worth it.

DIRECTIONS

Drive north from Hope on Highway 5 (Coquihalla Highway) to the Zopkios Ridge rest area (exit #217). Instead of turning under the highway towards the rest area, turn right as though you're heading towards the nearby highway maintenance shed. Look for a small gravel pipe-line service road on your right and park alongside it. The trail head is off of the pipeline service road, immediately after the small creek next to where you parked.

CARPOOLING SUGGESTIONS

  • Carpooling requests should be made by comment with your RSVP.
  • Please remember to reimburse your driver for gas. The suggested rate is $5.00 per passenger per hour of driving time on flat road.
  • Please put muddy hiking boots in a clean plastic bag and change into runners after the event/activity.
  • Please be on time.

BE PREPARED!
The weather as we all know can and often does change so please ensure you bring the items I mention in the "Things to bring" list.

Please be on time. I will be leaving the carpooling area and parking lot meetup locations within 10 minutes at the stated time.

HOW DO RSVP's AND WAIT LISTS WORK?

First of all, there is no need to RSVP "No", if you are not attending. We only need to know who is attending. The "No" feature is there for people who need to change their RSVP.

The "YES" list is for people who are SURE they will attend an event. If you think you may be able to make it, please do not click "YES". As always, if you are on the "YES" list, we expect you to show up. If you don't, you will be flagged and if it occurs again we will remove you from the group.

The "Wait list" is activated when an event is full. If you are on the Wait list, you are waiting for someone from the "YES" list to cancel, then you can take his spot. Do not show up at an event unless your name appears on the "YES" list.

Good job! I was thinking of you guys during my hike to the Haynes Valley Junction - not a drop of rain on the North Shore all day.

Ok Wayne, appreciate your honesty... just to reiterate we are NOT approaching from the NE which is definitely more sketchy (almost mountaineering sketchy at this time of year). We will be taking a safe and steady pace and although its too early to celebrate, the weather looks like its in our favour. See you on the next one.

I was up Zoa today, near Needle, unless there is a major change we should expect deep spring 'corn' snow. Snowshoes could be helpful depending on how hard you want to work. The east side approach will be scary.

Thanks for the info Wayne... ya this is the problem with shoulder season hikes... what gear to bring... and the approach to the peak is from the west.

I suggest that we can discuss a secondary carpool location in Chilliwack at the Time Horton's on Vedder Rd. I generally like to stop there for fuel and caffeine regardless.

Please let me know if you are driving and if you are willing to take passengers in the comments area... and please make sure "notifications" below the comment box is checked so that you receive updates of comments/communications from this event if you RSVP.
