Geocoding turns addresses and place names into geographic coordinates for mapping. Geocoding is one of the essential tools you need to put points on maps and power routing and navigation. When you type in an address or landmark in to your phone, a geocoding process converts those words into coordinates and displays the search result on your map.

In this hands-on session, you'll learn:

  • What is geocoding and examples of it
  • Types of open data available for finding addresses
  • Tools you can use to do geocoding, including the open-source Mapzen Search geographic search engine
  • How to turn a list of addresses into points on a map
  • How to add geocoding to a Leaflet map

We'll also have short demonstrations of projects that applied geocoding, so you can get an idea of the magnificent power of place search!

Bring your laptop! All levels invited.
