Hiking Meditation Message Board › Biginners Mind
"Beginner's mind" is a concept in Zen Buddhism. It refers to having an attitude of openness, eagerness, and a lack of preconceptions. I would like to add beginners mind to the practice of Hiking Meditation. Beginners mind in Hiking Meditation will also refer to an attitude of openness, eagerness, and a lack of preconceptions. This lack of preconceptions is very difficult for humans to experience! It is however wonderfully rewarding, when if just in an instant we are able to be free in this way. Free of our preconceptions! Imagine it. Being so fully in the moment that we see trees and the blue sky as if we are seeing them for the first time.
We usually do not see what is right in front of us. We have ideas about, we think about, what is right in front of us. This is of course a necessary function of the human brain, however we never turn it off. We get stuck by turning the same ideas and thought patterns around and around until they have become a habit and our mind looses its freshness. To see with freshness is beginner’s mind. This experience is utterly free of all judgments, it has the capacity to ignite an entirely new way of experiencing our lives. When we come together as Mindful Hikers to hike, we have cleared our calendar. We have cleared our time to be outdoors. We have the support of each other. Securing a time and doing it together forms a structure which upholds the potential for us to discipline our minds so that we may live our lives with a fresh attitude.
My hope is that Hiking Meditation will ignite mindfulness in our daily lives. That together we may learn to see each new moment with an attitude of openness, eagerness, and a lack of preconceptions. Beginners mind.
