Wow, I was really surprised to see a great event going on in DC this week. DC is having it's 1st annual week for the animals! There are numerous events going on this week until Sunday in and around the DC area. Please go to the website (http://www.dcanimals.org/information.html) and take a look. I would say there were dozens of different events listed! Everything from lectures, pet adoptions, events for kids, a folk festival, parades, an animals art evening, and a gala on Saturday.

I am planning on attending an event that is very relevant to the mission of Maryland Votes for Animals. An animals law night is taking place at George Washington University this Thursday evening from 7-9:00. The description states that there will be in attendance "top animal welfare leaders in the world" (not just here but in the entire world!). Here are the details:

"Thursday, June 4th 7:00pm - 9:00pm

1st Washington DC Week for the Animals Law Night
George Washington University Law School
Faculty Conference Center, 5th Floor
Burns Building
716 20th Street NW
Washington, DC 20052

Special speakers will discuss a wide variety of legal issues regarding animal welfare. This extraordinary panel will feature special speakers which include some of the top animal welfare leaders of our world.

A unique evening in which to hear Attorney Raj Panjwani, India?s highly honored and leading animal advocate. Also speaking are Lisa La Fontaine, President & CEO of Washington Humane Society, Scott Giacoppo, CPO of Washington Humane Society, Eric Glitzenstein, partner Meyer, Glitzenstein & Crystal, Russ Mead, Executive Director & General Counsel of Farm Sanctuary and Nancy Perry, Vice President of Government Affairs for The Humane Society of the United States.

Due to limited space, we ask you, if possible, to please pre-register by emailing [address removed]

Learn more about George Washington Law School at http://www.law.gwu.edu/"

This is a free lecture that is practically in our backyard. We don't need to spend money flying there or on a hotel room. Not to mention the fact that making contacts with other people in different areas in the animal welfare community can only help us since we can find out what's worked for other groups. No need to reinvent the wheel.

Please let me know if you would like to attend. There is limited room so you must RSVP ASAP.

Mute Swans

One last thing, please don't forget to call the govenor's office about the Mute Swan issue. Joe Lamp, a member of our group has been working tirelessly on helping these beautiful animals. Please do you part:

Would you please help us save the lives of Maryland?s few remaining mute swans by contacting Governor Martin O?Malley at website http://www.gov.state.md.us/mail/ Tell Governor O?Malley to: 1) Stop the Maryland Department of Natural Resources (DNR) from brutally killing the less than 450 remaining mute swans we have in Maryland; 2) Require Maryland?s DNR to do the following:

A. impose an immediate moratorium on the lethal control of Mute Swans;

B. use non-lethal humane controls to manage the swan population;

C. use lethal methods only as a last resort when significant negative impacts cannot be alleviated through non-lethal methods
