This is the morning workshop and the content is different from the afternoon one, same day. Both - A.M. and P.M. ones - are equally important and useful as you will learn how to use different online tools provided FREE by the U.S. Census Bureau to generate the data you need.

IMPORTANT NOTE Space is limited, so please sign up early. Participants are encouraged to bring their own laptops or other mobile devices for this workshop. We will provide free wireless Internet (WiFi) access in the training room. Bring pen, paper and own water. Complimentary self-parking is included.

9:00 A.M. - 12:00P.M. -The Census Data for Community Analysis Workshop will focus on community data. Participants will learn how to use census population and business data to assess the community or service area that they are interested in. This will include becoming familiar with prepackaged narrative and data profiles available for areas within our state. Attendees will also be taught how to improve their skills at obtaining key data in an efficient manner using the Bureau’s data tools, especially the American FactFinder tool. This tool has been revised to make it easier to locate and access data. These new features are now available, many of which were based on user feedback. The workshop will also focus on accessing race and ethnicity data for Hawaii.

GUEST SPEAKER Jerry Wong is an excellent and a frequent speaker on cultural diversity and demographic trends. As a Data Dissemination Specialist for the Census Bureau’s Los Angeles Region, he has been - for over 20 year - the Bureau trainer for our State of Hawai'i.

Jerry has served and worked with community groups, businesses, elected officials, planners, other organizations and the media and trained thousands of individuals on the use of demographic and economic census data for market research, community analysis and planning, grant proposals and general decision-making which involves the use of statistical information. His experience includes advising to The Nielsen Company—the nation’s leading television, radio, and consumer measurement company.

Over the course of 4 decennial censuses in 34 years of service, Jerry’s experience has been extensive in both the Census Bureau’s missions of collecting and disseminating information. He has worked in management positions during each of the last 4 censuses. Jerry’s data collection experience also includes supervising five of the Bureau’s ongoing health surveys in the Los Angeles Region. Jerry holds a Bachelor of Arts Degree in Political Science from UCLA and a Masters Degree in Social Welfare also from UCLA.
