plus ça change, plus c'est la même chose

Good Morning Friends,

Firstly thank you all for the support you have given us over the last 18 months or so, it is wonderful to see so many of you come along every week or when you can.  Together we have created a welcoming atmosphere where people come to have a great time and meet new people while enjoying vegan food.

We are planning to make a few changes to the group.  These are largely cosmetic, including  going forward we plan to call ourselves "Meat Free Hong Kong".  We hope that this will better represent our main activities - organizing the Meat Free Monday events.  These are aimed at encouraging as many people as possible to be vegetarian/vegan one day or even just one meal a week rather than telling people they should adopt it as a full time lifestyle.  This is already the case in the makeup of our membership and attendees but we still occasionally get people ask if they are allowed to come if they are not a vegan.  This will not change our policy that all food at our events should be vegan, we want everyone to be able enjoy everything on the table.

If you are thinking about becoming vegetarian or vegan please come and talk to us and we will be happy to provide you with with encouragement, support and information, but it must be your choice. We don't feel it is right for us to tell other people what decisions they should make or denigrate them for making different ones to our own.

This is not to say we wont share our opinions, experience and research if the topic is being discussed, just that we don't think someone is a bad person because they disagree.

Other changes will include trying to develop the look of our Meetup pages, work out the best ways to keep in touch with our members and promote our activities.

Over the next few months we hope to register as an official society with the HK government.  This will have no real impact for you except there will be an official membership to join if you want. What it will involve is some form of constitution setting out what our aims are, if you have opinions on this please let us know, we will circulate a draft (once we have one!).

In the longer term we want to make it easier for anyone to get involved in organizing events either on a regular or ad-hoc basis.  Many thanks to Eric for all the work he already does on this.

Please  be patient with us while we work through these changes, it will take time to find and change all the meetup settings and we will make mistakes along the way!

Many Thanks

Shara and Daniel

P.S. The Hong Kong Vegan (and derivatives) name and websites will still be used at some non-meetup events where it is more appropriate.
